Cost is a factor. Needs to be safe neighborhood for single mom and young child.
I'm thinking downtown Silver Spring, maybe? How's Brookland? I live in Arlington now, but the commute to Galludet metro will be long. |
| Mt Rainier or Brookland |
| I'm OP. I should say I can drive or metro, but if I drive I need to account for the price of parking by renting/buying a less expensive place. I don't have strong feelings yet on rent versus buy -- will probably figure that out once I locate a neighborhood. |
Or Cottage City, Avondale or arts district of Hyattsville. |
Takoma Park would be doable, as would Downtown Silver Spring. Both have lots of apartments where you could rent while you sort out your options, and both are safe with perfectly fine school options. |
| Silver Spring would be a horrid commute! |
It wouldn't be too bad. And from SS metro it's only a few stops; maybe 10-15 minutes. |
| You and this other single mom currently living in MD should probably get together since you're looking for the same thing: http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/545385.page |
| Budget? |
| I live a short WALK from Gallaudet and have two young kids in public school. busget for renting/buying? Living in H Street/NOMA with young kids is great. Getting more expensive but far cheaper than many parts of he city. |
What are you talking about? It is maybe 15 minutes on the red line from Silver Spring station to NoMa Gallaudet. |
Hahaha WHAT? |
| Budget is under $2000 per month. 2 BR. Need washer and dryer in the unit and need parking. I kind of like the suburbs and would be very happy to stay in Arlington but it's too many hours per day away from DC (with the commute). I have a preference for quieter neighborhoods. |
| I have a friend, also a single mom, in your exact shoes who loves in an apartment in Brookland. She seems to love it. Silver Spring also sounds promising for you. |
It is four stops from silver spring to NoMa. 15 minutes sounds right. |
