Single mama looking for place in DC

Hi- I'm a deaf mama- first post here.

I'm looking for a place in DC. I currently live in MD. I have a 2 year old and I'm hoping to move to DC next year to try to get my then 3 year old in LAMB. I'm also going to Gallaudet University in the fall for Social Work regarding Child Welfare and most likely will work in DC with the Child and Family Services as a Social Worker. Right now I'm trying to get in the family housing on campus which would make my life easier but if not- what would be safe and affordable places on a single income live in DC? $1500/mo would be good.

I'm saving up to buy a place of my own but I'm not planning on it for a few years. I would really like a SFH because I plan to have more kids/foster.

Any advice is welcome!

There are places in Columbia Heights and Adams Morgan/Mt Pleasant which is an easy commute to Gallaudet.

Here's a 750 sqft 1 Bedroom on 18th Street NW going for $1,600/mo. Just near your budget line and its a great location for commuting - not far from S2/S4/S9 lines and the 42/43 lines. http://realestate.popville.com/listing/3yd-MRIS-DC9606468/1852-columbia-road-northwest-b-adams-morgan-washington-dc-20009/

LAMB is virtually impossible to get into so I wouldn't plan your house around that location. Also they have two locations so if you got in (less than 3% chance), you don't know where you will be (ne or nw). Lastly do you need a 2 bedroom? My bet is yes if you're looking to get more kids. Your chances east of the river are pretty low with that budget. You may be able to get a 2 bedroom in the Edgewood area (prob $1600-1700). I would say Deanwood would be your best bet. Start off with Craigslist (be careful of the listing seems too good to be true) on your budget. Also, I'd recommend looking into other charters as LAMB is almost a non starter. Bridges is a good charter (although not Spanish) and is opening a beautiful new campus next door to Fort Totteb metro.

+1 on LAMB. I believe there's about a 5% chance you'll get in without siblings. But there are many charters, and ones convenient to Gallaudet, if you are open to them.

Look in the Trinidad neighborhood or Woodridge or maybe even Fort Lincoln.

OP, a few things.

1) What are your thoughts about school OTHER than LAMB? The LAMB odds are so impossible that your housing choices should absolutely factor in other schools. Is it the Montessori that appeals to you, the dual language, or both?

2) Housing with that budget is going to be tight. Here are a couple of apartments in the general Mt. Pleasant/Adams Morgan/Columbia Heights area. They're both 1 bedrooms apartments, and small. A second bedroom in that price range is pretty much out of the question.

Read the subject line and her notes. Single mother, one child already, in college. My guess is she doesn't want more kids and is just looking for a stable environment for her first child. It may be uncomfortable but a 1 bdrm would be doable for the two of them to rent until she get on-campus family housing.

For right now when I'm in college and only have one child- I would prefer 1 bedroom. If 2 bedroom and it's cheap then yes! Otherwise one bedroom is very doable.

Really hmm.. I would like Montessori or dual language schools (full immersion) but both is a huge plus. I'm willing to go anywhere. I have a car so a specific location isn't important. Just need to be safe for my daughter. But if it's metro accessible- even nicer but not necessary.

Stay in NE to be closer to both Gallaudet and the schools you want to try for. Not sure why people are suggesting Columbia Heights or Mt. Pleasant.

I ask you why? My main focus is child welfare. However it will be my internship in a few years so I'll see what it's like then see what's my next step after that.

Montessori and dual language are both pretty tight. A few charters that is suggest looking into are as follows. All kind of hard to get into, but some have shots. Keep in mind the lottery period for 2017-18 school year will be from this Nov/Dec-March.

Mundo Verde
Inspired Teaching
Bridges
DC Bilingual
Lamb
Yu Ying
Creative Minds
Lee Montesori
Shining Stars Montessori
Breakthrough Montessori
Two Rivers
EW Stokes
Bethune

Some DCPS not far from Gallaudet:
Langdon
Taylor
JO Wilson
Seaton
