Need to re-home 2 adult cats

Anonymous
I'm looking for resources to responsibly re-home our two cats. We want to find a loving home for them, and not put them in a shelter. One is a 16 year old female, the other is a 15 year old male. They are both generally in good health, although the female sometimes gets allergies, and both have been spayed/neutered. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to find a new home for them? They are currently indoor cats, but have been indoor/outdoor previously. They have their claws, and like going outdoors.

Why do you need to rehome them? Sadly no one is going to want cats that old.

My husband has allergies and has been putting up with it for years. My son likely has allergies too, but we haven't had him tested yet. In the next few months we are likely going to have to downsize our living space significantly for a career transition, and given the allergies, we just can't take them with us when we move into a smaller space.

Yes, I'm concerned no one will want older cats, but they are very sweet and are pretty low maintenance.

Try King Street Cats.

I'd reach out to cat rescue groups, and offer to make a generous donation.

They aren't going to live much longer- is it really fair to rehome them at this stage--the stress could kill them alone

We don't really have a choice. The new place is way too small to be able to keep them. Our last option is to send them to the country where my folks live, but they have dogs, so that's not ideal.

Well none of this is ideal. I'd send them to your folks.

This is really sad. They don't have much longer and I can't imagine anyone would take them (especially both) at that age. I agree the stress might kill them, especially if they've been with you most of their lives. P

I have had my 2 cats in a 1 br before. It wasn't that bad.
Are the allergies treatable so that you could put up with them for another year or two and see where they are?

I don't understand this. Cats don't take up much space. Are you concerned about their litter box?

I know this is DCUM but please no judgment people. I would really like some helpful suggestions about places that may make this possible. Thanks to the King Street person's suggestion!

Yes, it's hard, yes, it sucks. But life sometimes is about making shitty decisions that suck big time.

Honestly, I would make the decision to put them to sleep rather than try to rehome them. I don't believe in quantity of life over quality of life, and with cats that old who have been with you that long, it would be very hard to ensure not only that you can find a home that would take them, but also that a) they would be happy there and b) they would't end up in a shelter if (more like when) they started having issues either because they're old or because they aren't adapting well.

I understand you feel you have no other choice but to try to rehome them. If you can't find a home that you know will work for them, then euthanasia would be the kindest and most responsible option IMO.

They're elderly cats and need very little room, and you had them when you moved (for years). You just want to dump sick, old cats that rely on you. Shame on you. What a nasty, awful thing for you to do.

What room does a cat need except a spot for a litter box? I had two cats in a one bedroom. Giving up old cats is exceptionally cruel. Don't do that. It'd be kinder to enthanize them instead.
