Hi OP, what did you decide to do?

Probably just dumped them outside her old house.

There's an organization called Senior for Seniors that rescues mature cats and pairs them with senior citizens (age 55 and over). The website is http://s4s-usa.org/

I don't believe in quantity of life over quality of life, and with cats that old who have been with you that long, it would be very hard to ensure not only that you can find a home that would take them, but also that a) they would be happy there and b) they would't end up in a shelter if (more like when) they started having issues either because they're old or because they aren't adapting well.

I understand you feel you have no other choice but to try to rehome them. If you can't find a home that you know will work for them, then euthanasia would be the kindest and most responsible option IMO.

I'd do this, and make them indoor/outdoor again so they can escape the dogs more easily.

Get a "Furminator", sold at pet stores. It is a special comb that takes off the fur that carries the dander. Brush weekly. Also, the unscented wipes to pet your allergy-inducing cats with also cut down on the allergies.
