Job with long commute

Anonymous
60 miles round trip in traffic from 10 min commute... Plus childcare pick up...

Would you do it? How do you negotiate flexibility in the offer?

Pay is the same. I took a job I hate in a new industry because of 1) desperation (lay off) 2) no commute. It's absolutely the wrong culture fit for me. I could care less about what they do... I am so pissed at myself for taking job and not just filing for unemployment and looking.

Interviewing for another job back in my field/industry. It sounds great - leading the team, topic I have 15 years experience in and have a passion. But commute is at the exact wrong place on the beltway.

The only way I can do this is with some work from home or alternate hours like 7:30-3:30 -

How do I make this a lead negotiation point and get what I need?

How old are your children?

I just wouldn't do it. How long is 60 miles round trip? My 10 mile commute takes an hour here.

I'm taking a job with an hour commute each way, but I get to telework 3 days a week and the commute is easy (direct bus).

Op here - I have an infant..

With beltway traffic - it would be minimum 1 1/2 hrs each way during rush hour. No direct metro or bus routes.

If I could do 2 days work from home I could manage it.

How to negotiate?

I wouldn't take this job. Sounds horrific. That's WAY too long to be on the road. I would need 4 days a week telework to deal with that hell. Our traffic is BAD here and stressful.

Ask if you can telework 2 days a week.

I think commute is something that just really drains people.

How long have you been in the current job? And how in demand is your field?

If you haven't been in the current job long and then take this job but realize the commute is impossible, then you'll be looking to leave quickly, and you will have two short stints on your resume. Most employers will forgive one, because everyone has an experience where they take something only to realize it isn't a good fit. But two in a row looks bad.

A lot also depends on the 60 miles. If it is 60 miles outside of the DMV area and against traffic and during slightly off hours, then that isn't so bad. If it is 60 miles in DC during rush hour, then that's going to be painful.

Is there a way that you could get childcare near the job? If you do take it, that seems like the best plan. Then you won't be stressing out about trying to get to daycare on time.

Best of luck to you. This is a tough area for job searching because the commute situation can just be wretched.

Oh geez. Sounds like job is in Tysons and you're in east moco/PGC or vice versa?

I'm in Tysons and a woman on our team lives in Takoma park MD and works 7a-3p. I think that's the only realistic way to do it.

I'd wait til you get an offer though and negotiate at that point. That's when you're in the best position.

Also wanted to add, there are plenty of daycares in Tysons and one of them may be able to take your baby starting in the fall if you get on lists now.

No chance!

Op here - 10:15 you got it. I live up 270 - job is in Tyson's.

If I got this job, I'd drop current from
My resume - I've only been here a few months.

Why can't you move closer?

I wouldn't do it unless you can switch daycares and be able to spend that 3 hours a day with your kid.

Op here - moving this year is not an option financially. We plan to move in 2017.

I do a 70 mile reverse commute (Rockville to Howard County) and I find that soul sucking and too difficult to manage with 2 young kids. I would absolutely not consider MoCo to Tysons. In fact I did have a job opportunity in Tysons and turned it down because of the commute. If you otherwise really want the job, then go through the recruiting process and then negotiate once you get an offer. GL!

I live in MoCo and refuse to even look at jobs in Virginia, solely because of the traffic. I assume most Virginians do the same.

If there was a metro line connecting the red to the silver, that would sure make a world of difference.
