s/o What places are just too dangerous for Americans to travel?

Anonymous
The North Korea thread mentions that it's a place that will imprison Americans simply for being American. Where else should Americans not risk travel to?

No American should risk going to the Arlington Costco on weekends. That place is crazy.

Capitol Hill past 10 pm.

The PPs' responses are funny. You do know that this idiot wasn't imprisoned for simply being American. Unless you mean he was being an American douche. Only this kind of doofus would think it harmless to rip off a propaganda banner inside a dictatorship.

+1. I say we leave him there. I find it impossible to believe that he wasn't aware that what he was doing was wrong. He probably thought he could get away with it, that someone would rescue him if things got really bad, etc.

Someone will rescue him. He's a lily white college boy. No way he's doing hard labor. Anywhere, ever.

North Korea and Iran across the board.

I also think people shouldn't travel to any country where they don't know the culture at all if they aren't willing to put in any effort to learn the culture before traveling and act accordingly. Prime example, that idiot kid in the 90s that went to Singapore and acted like a damned fool, vandalized a bunch of stuff, and got caned (although he was living there at the time, not just visiting).

Apparently Williamsburg, VA, if you aren't caucasian....

What he did was stupid, and you're right that they didn't arrest him and convict him on a charge of "being American," but as an American over there, you need to be exceedingly careful because if you inadvertently step out of line and get caught, they will throw the book at you just to make a statement to the U.S. and the rest of the world. He could have gotten the same consequence for far less than what he did.

Just don't wear tennis shoes. That's how they can spot you. And follow local rules. Know the laws before you go to a country.

N. Korea...can't imagine why any westerner would want to go there. You might not come back.

Anywhere in the middle east. Parts of Africa...Sudan, Libya, Egypt outside the main tourist areas, Syria, Somalia etc.

Parts of South America...parts of Colombia and Ecuador.

I'm planning an around the world trip and have read up on some of this.

Eh. Train stations in major European cities like Stockholm. Areas with unusual crime surges:
