I'm interested in finding a 1 day a week half day pre-school class for my daughter in our area. She's born in 10/06 so she misses the 2 year old deadline it appears everywhere. We sent in an application for the Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church but we've heard that the class fills up mostly with "siblings" of current students.
Any other suggestions for a class for older 1s that start in Sept.? |
It's called DAYCARE. Preschool starts at 2, not 1, though I'm sure churches do a "moms day out", in lieu of preschool. I've also NEVER heard of a 1/2 day once a week option??
I'd find a nanny for that day, if you need to work. If you don't need to work, then sign up for a mom/baby class. |
We're in the same boat (we also applied to CCPC's 1 y/o class and aren't optimistic about getting in). You'll have a lot more options next year once she's 2. I agree with PP that your best bet is to sign up for some classes so your DD gets social time and perhaps hire a sitter so you can have a free morning. And who knows, maybe there won't be as many siblings as expected and CCPC will have some openings! |
I'm the poster. Thanks for the suggestion but I don't need daycare. We have a full-time day nanny because I work full-time. We're having another baby this summer so I will be off for a few months but I'd love for the baby to go to an activity one day a week by herself, without a parent/nanny. She loves other kids. I know Temple Emanuel has a pre-school starting in September with a 1 year old class but the parent has to attend for the first semester and it's twice a week and rather expensive.
I was just curious if there were any other existing 1 year old programs out there in the area that I didn't know about. |
To echo all the other posters, the only type of preschool classes you could do would be mommy and me type classes.
I know there are a couple "preschool" mommy and me classes but those might even be for 2 yo's come to think of it. |
I love all the comments from people who have no idea what they are talking about... Just because you haven't heard of classes for one-year-olds doesn't mean they don't exist. Keep looking - several churches (not just Chevy Chase Pres) offer these programs. My son attends one in Kensington and it is not Mommy and Me nor Daycare. |
Well, why don't you please enlighten us with the names of the several churches who offer these programs? Gee - you criticize posters for not knowing of them but your post was not helpful in the least bit as it doesn't provide any freaking names of the programs. |
I live in the area and have done quite a bit of research on available preschool-like, drop-off programs (not daycare) for 1 year olds. Most of the churches have a 2 year old cutoff. CCPC accepts 1 year olds, as does CCBC. However, CCBC is either 2 or 3-days a week and quite expensive if you're also paying a nanny (not to mention, almost impossible to get into unless there's a sibling attending). Perhaps there are more options in Kensington, but OP asked about CC/Bethesda. I agree with PP, if the 23:05 poster knows of other programs the rest of us have missed in our research, it would be nice if she shared them. |
Temple Sinai on Military Rd. also has a similar program, but it's not quite what you're looking for because a parent must attend. Isn't there a co-op school in Norwood park? What's the entry age for that? If I was in your situation, and could not attend with the child, I personally would hunt down every Mom's day out option I could find. Not so ubiquitous in the city, but worth a shot. |
It's not 1/2 day by any means, but what about something like a "bridge" program at Musikids? Where the kids work with the instructors on their own for 90 mins.
Haven't done it myself - we waited until DS was 2 to send him to preschool. Even then, he was teary-eyed every morning for a month... But in retrospect, it might have been a good thing to help transition him... |
A pp mentioned the co-op in Norwood park--referring, I think, to the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Nursery School. It accepts 3 and 4-year-olds. |
Hi. We don't have a 1 year old, but an almost 2 year old and find ourselves in a similar situation. As far as I am aware, the two you mentioned are the only places that accept under-3s in a part-time preschool program. There are preschools such as Rock Creek Montessori that will accept 2 year olds in a part-time preschool program, I believe, but I was really looking for a 2-3 days a week program so that my son could have a playgroup really. I've given up on that idea and instead, I've just added a bunch of activities to his schedule - gym (Marva's Tots), music (Imagination Stage) and swimming. My nanny also tries to do playdates with kids who live in the neighborhood. Hope that's a bit helpful to you in terms of thinking of other things you could instead of preschool ... |
The Waldorf school in Bethesda has something like this - check it out, it is parent child until 2-3 years old but seems very interesting. I live in DC and it was just to far out |
Thanks for asking this question. I was wondering about the same thing for my 1 year old. And I know exactly what you mean about wanting to find something with other kids. |
I'm not trying to be difficult, just curious, what do you consider to be the differences between "daycare" and "preschool" when discussing care for a 1 year old? |
