If you could spend a long weekend in Europe without kids where would you go?

DH will be traveling abroad for work and we are contemplating leaving the kids with family for a long weekend so I can go meet him after his work is done and we can have a getaway. We have been to Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Ireland and England (London) prior to getting married and having kids, and we would love to try somewhere new. Where would you go if you had this opportunity? Any particularly great places for this kind of 4 day trip? Given the short length of the trip and the fact that we have kids at home, we want to go somewhere with a direct flight from here and where we will be pretty connected by phone and Internet. So far, a few people have suggested Prague. Thanks!

Where will your husband be traveling from?

Croatia would be high on my list.

Fly to Munich. Rent a car and go to Alps. I agree with poster who suggested Salzburg--although I don't think there are direct flights. So, go to Munich and drive to Berchtesgaden or another small Alpine town.

Prague is gorgeous.
We spent 5 days there a few days ago. You'd be fine with 4. I HIGHLY recommend this tour http://www.tasteofprague.com/prague-food-tour/
and take it in the beginning of your trip, if possible.

I also recommend taking the train to the Sedlec ossuary in Kutna Hora and also visiting St. Barbara's cathedral and taking a tour of the silver mine. Those 3 things will take up a whole day.

Sorry, that should have said a few YEARS ago--not days!

Sorry, trying to figure out the logistics... Will be already be in Europe? Will you fly direct from DC to meet him?

Also what time of year are we talking about?

You've gotten some good suggestions.... For direct flights I'd look at Brussels (and Bruges or Ghent), Vienna (plenty to do for 3-4 days), Amsterdam, Munich (you could add Garmisch or Neuschwanstein).

Some other ideas (but not sure if there are direct flights from DC) would be Prague and Budapest as already suggested and maybe Stockholm if going in summer.

Croatia is great but I don't think logistically easy for a longn weekend. Don't think there are direct flights to Dubrovnik or Split.

Consider jet lag also -- the shorter flights will leave more time for sightseeing, which argues for Amsterdam or Brussels and against Budapest.

OP here - Sorry! I should have mentioned we'll be going in mid-April. DH will already be out there, so we'd both be flying into wherever we end up deciding to go independently, and then coming home together. Please keep the ideas coming! And thank you to those who have suggested particular places with specific itineraries! Incredibly helpful.

mid-April, I would go somewhere south - Spain or Italy? I love Italy. I would skip Portugal; not as interesting as other countries.
