My husband and I attended several ANC meetings by Zoom this year. They were awful. The Density Bros dominated the meeting and used the chat function to beat up on anyone who voiced a contrary opinion. The new ANC chairman, who it turns out lives most of the time in Maryland, hired someone who claimed to be a journalist to “facilitate” the meeting, and then the “facilitator” used to chat function himself to attack anyone who disagreed with Smart Growth. (It should be called Snark Growth.”) People had to sign up for the ANC meeting using their email addresses. The ANC 3C “facilitator” had access to the emails and then later sent personal Go Fund Me appeals to a number of folks, seeking contributions to pay off his tax liabilities and move back to DC. Turns out thst he doesn’t really live here, either! It was very weird and inappropriate. The Smart Growth commissioners now in charge of ANC 3C come across as a bunch of bullies. |
Wait! The largest, tallest development underway in Upper NW and you say that, because it’s “matter or right” zoning, it’s not “Smart Growth” somehow? So by this logic, even though the Smart Growth industry lobbies for more and more upzoning in our our neighborhoods, in order to permit more, larger matter of right development, it will never truly be Smart Growth. Presumably this means that no matter how dense the development it will never be enough. It’s like Russia in Soviet times, when no matter how much power the state amassed and how much control is exercised in society, it would never be true Communism, which receded farther and farther into the future. (An interesting analogy given the past business connections between DC Smart Growth and shadowy Russian interests.) |
Nice try, but this predates the person you are talking about being involved by about 15 years. |
This is the type of GOP attack crap that Ward III Vision and CP Smart Growth have been pushing out fir the last couple of years. Trumpers pretending to be woke to sell their clients’ special interest agenda. |
| Or, just maybe, the people who have been supporting a better environmental solution to the built environment, and more housing resulting in more affordable housing, for the past 20 years are, you know, actually "woke." |
It’s ridiculous when a Smart Growth operative polls and message tests campaign themes for a climate-denier President, yet at the same time spinsfor other clients that massive development will address climate change. These are simply cynical and hollow talking points for DC Smart Growth. Speaking of climate change, look at the demolition of 4000 Wisconsin Avenue. Why isn’t more of the building structure being reused and renovated for the planned housing development? Think of the carbon footprint resulting from the demo of all of that concrete and steel, the hundreds, if not thousands of dump trucks needed to haul the rubble to landfills, and the carbon emissions to fabricate more steel and concrete for the replacement development. It’s wasteful and shameful. |
good point. And I cannot believe how they completely destroyed the facade on the building next to Fannie Mae? It was sort of wonderfully 80s--so ugly that it "worked" and even had a retro/Stranger things vibe by now. This crew (GGW) surely lives to bulldoze. |
| Another matter of right project. Ask the property owner. |
An excellent reason why DC shouldn’t FLUM up and upzone DC neighborhoods to permit this and even larger projects as a “matter of right” without regulatory review (in which community interests are heard). |
It’s a start demonstration that the talking points peddled by Ward 3 Vision, CP Smart Growth and the rest of the DC Smart Growth industry - that all of this dense development is good for the climate - are l complete ерунда. (That’s Russian for bulls%#t.) |

"smart growth industry" = environmentalists, people who support racial justice, affordable housing advocates, and mobility choices.
Quite the cabal. |
More like major development companies, lesser developers that still have strong political ties to the mayor, real estate investors, zoning law firms, consultants and Trumpy hired-gun political operatives. |
I wonder if we can get people to stop using "cabal" in this time of increased sensitivity about prejudicial language? Don't you think? |
