It started in the first couple pages. It’s the pro-guns at any costs crowd. Plus, a few questionable LEOs and LE wannabes. My brother is in law enforcement. His family FB account expresses his dismay about the shooting, but he could never post that on his account that has coworkers as friends.

The victim attacked the cop and knocked the cop and his 1 1/2 baby to the ground. If you start with what we DO know you will see that this victim played a role in this whole thing.

He “attacked” or he accidentally knocked him over?

And wasn’t the wife holding the baby?

Lots of unknowns.

The cop's lawyer has said that the cop was holding the baby at the food sample table when they were attacked and pushed to the ground. Now we are finding out that the man who attacked them was a probable schizophrenic who had recently been taken off of his meds which is likely what caused him to behave aggressively and irrationally that day.

The man suffered from a serious mental health issue, not an intellectual disability, which explains why he might have been so unpredictable and behaving so out of care for himself. He probably had some sort of psychotic hallucination. My heart goes out to his family. They very clearly loved him and were doing everything for him that they knew how to do.

And perhaps some sympathy for the man who was killed for having a mental health condition beyond his control?

I'm so sick of people with "mental illness" being excused for whatever horrific things they have done to other people. No, I have NO sympathy. Perhaps if you were the victim of someone with "mental illness" you wouldn't be so quick to give them a free pass to do whatever they want.

Exactly what horrific thing did the victim in this case do? Looks like he was the recipient of horrific behavior by a trigger-happy cop.

He slammed a 1 year old baby to the ground. That baby could have been badly injured or killed. Apparently he was still coming at them as they lay on the ground. He must have been hallucinating. and he was irrational and aggressive. That is why he got shot. His parents were trying to control him, they got in the middle and that's why they got shot.

It was a terrible situation that led to a tragic outcome, no question.

You're just inventing stories out of whole cloth.

Nope. The cops lawyer has stated that he was attacked and shoved to the ground along with his baby. The man's family has verified that he was probably schizophrenic and recently taken off his meds. The man and his parents are specifically the ones that got shot during this altercation. It is a logical assumption that the parents somehow put themselves in the middle of the situation in an attempt to control their hallucinating son.

The cop's lawyer? LOL

It was all captured on surveillance video...so if the cop's lawyer is misrepresenting the facts the video will show that, right?

It would if the police were to ever release the video. Must be nice when parties aligned with a potential defendant get to control when evidence comes to light.

No. Blame his parents for bringing a large, uncontrollable, violent mental case out in public.

OMG. I don't think that they had any way of knowing that he would have a violent outburst like that. They probably thought it would do him some good to get out of the house and they may have been worried to leave him alone so they opted to bring him along.

One parent could have stayed home with him while the other went to Costco. You don't subject innocent people to an unpredictable violent person.

He was only recently taken off his meds so his parents may have underestimated the psychosis that he was experiencing. I think that they truly loved their son and were doing the best that they knew how to do for him.

That may be, but it doesn't mean the police officer was wrong to defend himself and his own child.

He was wrong to shoot the person who intervened to try to keep everyone safe. This officer clearly doesn’t have the judgment or temperament to carry a firearm.

At this time it is not clear to us (the general public) that that is what happened (parents intervened to keep everyone safe.) We don't know how they reacted, how close they got to the police officer, what they might have said/done, etc.

We do know that the only people who were shot were members of the the French family, so obviously the police officer was not just shooting at random.

Then they failed. Bringing a large, unmedicated schizpphrenic man to a public space is not something you do just to test things out. I don't doubt that they loved their son, but you don't get to endanger others just because you love your adult son w/ issues.

I'm sure that if they could choose differently they would do so.

Look at the website for the French family's lawyer. This isn't his first rodeo. His whole shtick is suing police officers. I'm sure he knows all the ins and outs of getting the video made public, if that's what would benefit his case and client. So far I haven't heard/read a peep from him wanting the video made public. Hmmmm.....

Yeah, because lawyers never spin facts to paint their clients in the best possible light. Has the video been released?

They could have. One could have gone to the store, while the other stayed home. This should be basic knowledge when you have an unmedicated, severely mentally ill person in your care.

Yes, he’s a civil rights lawyer. He works to ensure that law enforcement is held to standards of the law and the Constitution instead of violating people’s rights with impunity. Our Constitution doesn’t mean anything if no one is making sure the government is held accountable for obeying it.

Lol, and I noticed you didn't even respond to my statement that this highly experienced, cop suing, Constitution defender, has not said one word about wanting the video made public. If the video shows his innocent clients calmly waiting for a chicken sample and suddenly being gunned down by a trigger happy cop, you can bet he'd be making a huge scene about the fact that the video hasn't been released yet. He seems perfectly content that the public has not been allowed to see what really happened.

It was a moronic comment because you don’t know what’s happening behind the scenes. If the video is really bad for the officer, the department may want to negotiate a quiet settlement with the family on their own liability, and then the family will get the video for their own use in their suit against the officer. If there’s a prospect of the department offering enough money, the family may be willing to accept keeping the tape private for now knowing it will come out later.

Could the parents be held liable for bringing their unmedicated son into Costco?

Look at the website for the French family's lawyer. This isn't his first rodeo. His whole shtick is suing police officers. I'm sure he knows all the ins and outs of getting the video made public, if that's what would benefit his case and client. So far I haven't heard/read a peep from him wanting the video made public. Hmmmm.....

+2. LOLing at you all who are taking the word of the officer’s lawyer as gospel and ignoring what the family’s lawyer said.

He was an adult, so unless he was declared incompetent and his parents given legal custody of him, no, they can’t be held legally responsible. And even if they could, for what? The cop’s ER bill to check his bruise?
