Jefferson Academy Kool-Aid

There's a mom who currently has kids st Brent and Jefferson. Try to find her on the playground to see what she knows. She's very helpful although she may not know a lot about this topic.

I have substitute taught at Jefferson and I was impressed by how well the teachers managed student behavior.

Not so impressed with the student behavior I sometimes see around the Waterfront Metro plaza after school - packs of kids in Jefferson uniforms shoving, tripping, and slugging one another with book bags, screaming obscenities, shrieking etc.

Pretty typical for middle school.

In DC when most of the kids live in housing projects.

No, just pretty typical of middle schoolers in general from what I've seen.

You've done a tour of Title 1 DC middle schools just after the last bell? Stand outside BASIS, or Washington Latin, or Deal when school's out and observe. Yes, you will see some pushing and shoving, not the serious unruliness that's commonplace outside Jefferson (Stuart Hobson, Eliot-Hine etc.), at least once teachers and staff are out of earshot. KIPP seems to be something of an exception - they train, empower and use student security monitors in cross guard vests to police the behavior of peers on the streets near their campuses. I haven't heard packs of kids shouting obscenities outside DC KIPP middle schools or those serving large cohorts of high SES kids. It's not PC to say it, but the Jefferson peer group is a real problem for many Brent parents, not just the academics. And the fix...is?

Right now the Mall and DC tourist spots are flooded with MS groups from around the country on spring trips and there's a wide range of behavior there. Plenty of rowdy kids from all over.

"Packs of kids"? Middle schools serving "large cohorts of "high SES kids"? Why are you spending so much time hanging around outside middle schools after dismissal? Maybe you just aren't cut out for city life. There's no fix.

We've been checking out middle schools to try to figure out what to do in the fall (we're wait listed everywhere). We're not cut out for Jefferson or any other public middle school loaded with housing project kids. City life still works for us.

And you're going to find disadvantaged kids at every one of them.

Go private. That's what every family who likes city life but not city schools does. If you can't afford it, get out of the city.

What I hate about this is that you either have to be rich enough or poor enough to stay in the city. And if you're left with that, you're left with complete and utter socioeconomic segregation.
