The current 2nd and 3rd grades (which started that same year) are substantially different.

Your statement is ridiculous. How do you legally kick a kindergarten child out of a public school. Puhleeze.

Mom of a 4th grader here. I think that characterization is unfair to the families in that class. I can't speak for eveyone in that class, but we chose Yu Ying because of the opportunity to learn Chinese, not because our prior school was not working out.

Totally didn't mean to offend! Should have said "ideal" instead of "working out".

Well any family that chooses to attend a charter is saying that their IB school is not ideal for their child. How is YY charter class different in this opinion than your child. Why did you choose YY for your child? Was the IB school ideal. If not, why is your child not attending their IB ideal school.

But the fact remains that YY is a school with blind admission and a lottery like all of the other schools in the city. How might the next group or any future group be any different? Is there something with the way the school operates that counsels underperforming kids out before they get to that grade? Or has the school culture figured out how to support those types of kids better?

Demographically that class has a lot more FARMs students than the other classes. It's a dicier proposition to enroll your 1st grader in a brand new school, than to do so with a PreK or K child. Those parents generally were either highly motivated for Chinese (the higher income group, which looks more like other YY classes) or else had limited choices and possible problems at a previous school.

Subsequent classes have skewed much wealthier and more racially diverse, especially as the school became popular. In the younger classes, it's not uncommon to find parents who are driving students over from neighborhoods with high-performing schools, west of the park. That just didn't happen with the lead class.

Wrong again. I know someone IB for Janney in this class. And, there are others.

Former Yu Ying parent. Yu Ying is a great school but it is just not for everyone. My son was a candidate for the non immersion class. He came to Yu Ying in the second grade after taking Chinese at Thomson for two years, but immersion is completely different. We changed to Watkins this year because it was just a better fit. Even children who start at Yu Ying in PreK may not do well in the long run but it is definitely better to start from PreK in order to be successful. The school its self is really great though I would encourage people to check in out for their potential PreKers.

This class is different because these kids had already started school. The key word is "prior". My child did not have a prior school that was not ideal because she did not have a prior school at all. Look, moving kids to a new school in 1st grade is not something a lot of parents do. That is why you will see 200+ applicants for preK and K and <50 for 1st and 2nd grade.
