Hi posters.
Language immersion isn't for everyone---especially with a tough language like chinese. As parents we all have to decide if a school's model works well for our child or not. If my child had significant learning or attentional issues I wouldn't dream of immersion as a good way for him/her to get what he/she needs. Isn't it great that there are a variety of models/programs in schools out there so we can have options to find a good fit for our children? I've been there and was so relieved when I found a good fit for my child. I didn't blame his previous school's model---they did what they could, but ultimately, I'm his mom and it's up to me to find what works for him. I'm clear that NO school is the right fit or offers the right curriculum for each and every child.

If the kid cannot perform at grade level, 3rd grade, in English, it's ridiculous to keep them in Mandarin Chinese immersion. Doesn't have anything to do with race.

If it was a private school, they'd be counseled out but YY is obligated to help underperformers the best they can which is to focus on English for this group.

If these parents really want to help their kids, maybe they should focus their energy in providing extra tutoring so they perform at grade level. Maybe they can get a group discount at Kumon.

What in the world are you doing on DCUM?! Are you suggesting that one-size-fits-few? You are obviously far too sane for any discussion of charter/public schools in general, and Yu Ying in particular.

A mindless troll who can't even spell the name of the school starts a race-baiting discussion. Let's end it here -- there is no point in responding to the troll's comments and getting drawn into his/her warped logic. Suffice to say...

If you are a Yu Ying parent, you have lots of options, inluding the parent association, to have your questions answered and your concerns addressed.

If you aren't a Yu Ying parent, then contact the school directly and attend the sessions for prospective parents. Much of what is being posted here about Yu Ying is either altogether false or basically a non-issue.

Wow--are we a bit defensive here. Well I am going to call it what it is...if it looks like a duck and walks like a duck then it is a duck. Why focus on the spelling of the name when the questions had merit. Isn't this what the forum is for...and believe me--there are many people outside of the school community discussing how racist the school is....so why not get clarity?

The school admin is highly defensive and when the DCC was brought up, they were furious that someone might question their wisdom.

The reason these sort of threads keep popping up again and again is there are many who see that the school has real potential. Unfortunately the administration's defensiveness that meets any sort of question or challenge by parents holds back any sort of productive discussion.

Yu Ying needs new leadership and the sooner the better.

And for goodness sake, if you can't figure out the name of the school how can you expect people to take your questions seriously?

You are right; I have never really considered Yu Ying a viable option and never really bothered to learn name. Point well taken!!!!

And guess what? Now you've learned what a troll is (yes, you've just outed yourself as a troll).

Well, if a troll is someone who asks meaningful questions to a community (regardless of the spelling) trying to gain clarity then I guess I am troll. I am so glad that I was not called out on that when I was trying to find a school for my dd.

I want to thank everyone for the discussion on this forum. It has been quite insightful. I suppose the rumors that I have been hearing in the community about the school are true. AA parents in this specialized track, please watch this practice...it is quite harmful and the unspoken messages could do damage.

Perhaps Yu Ying will start to look at best practice in education and truly understand the real meaning of differentiation and multiculturalism. All children can learn with the right supports and with flexible grouping. .

I am not sure how the policy is racist. Unless the policy was designed and implemented with the goal of holding back just African American students, it can't be racist.

New poster here. Institutionalized racism are policies put in place (whether intentional or not) that have a harmful effect on marginalized groups of people. TRACKING African American students into a "less than" model is RACIST.

....and I heard that the students in this track were placed on the floor beneath the chinese immersions students. In essence, they are in the basement!

Any other solutions for students who are below grade level in English other than moving up floors?

Well besides moving up floors to be EQUAL with the others, they should also be given an EQUAL opportunity to learn both English AND Chinese if that is what the school's mission and charter states.

OK. Once again, the "I heard" posters clearly have no first hand knowledge. The DCC classroom is right across the hall from the regular classroom. The kids are not separated in "the basement". They also interact with the regular immersion classroom all the time. At specials (like art), at Unit of Inquiry (which is academic and a big block of time), and when the multi purpose room is done, at lunch.

Yu Ying's top two regular immersion classes are majority African American. The DCC class is also African American. So I'm unclear of people's logic on this thread---The kids struggling are African American, but the kids thriving and succeeding in Chinese are also African American. Why--because that is the demographic make up of the top two classes.

I heard that the "tracked" students are beaten!

I heard that the African American principal is tracking AA students because she's racist against AAs!

I heard that the "tracked" students are not given snacks!

I heard that the "tracked" students have segregated toilets and water fountains!

I heard that bizarre Yu Ying haters need to STFU!

One of the above is true.

LOL!

Don't forget the "tracked" students have to walk for miles because
