Whoa! https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/live-blog/brown-university-shooting-live-updates-rcna249097

I don't know what's going on here.

I think they had to release him within a certain amount of time, unless they were charging him. They may not yet have enough evidence to charge him with everything they what to charge him with.

They can certainly keep him under surveillance and make sure he is no danger to the community while they gather more evidence.

He does have ties to Brown. His linked in profile mentions he was enrolled in coursework at Brown this semester.

"University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
Incomplete, Psychology
Aug 2020
Grade: 3.91 cumulative

I attended online classes at UWM after graduating high school due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. I joined the army afterwards and resumed taking full time college classes here online in fall 2022 up until spring 2023. I transferred to Brown University after leaving service to attend in the Fall 2025 semester."

While it might not be true, he also apparently told a friend he was enrolled at Brown U and that he had to move out of his dowrm because it was flooded so he was living in a hotel.

He was trained as a sniper in the army. He had firearms in his hotel. I assume that the bullets didn't match what was used in the shooting. so they maybe had weak evidence to connect him to the murders and therefore had to release him for the moment.

But this guy is suspicious as hell.

Why is he suspicious? The above doesn't sound suspicious.

Nobody who goes to or went to UW-Madison calls it UWM...that is UW-Milwaukee. that alone makes it suspicious.

It was online...

I am reading posts on reddit that there are two guys with the same name both from Wisconsin...

Is it just the holding period? Are they saying this to have the guy think he’s off the hook and watching what he does immediately after? Or does this guy truly have mouthing to do with it. Hmmmm

Wait… you mean all the unhinged conspiracy theories about this person were BS? Color me shocked.

Well one has guns in a hotel in RI. Which one is that?

Brown just put out a statement that starts as follows:

“ Sunday, December 14, 11:47 p.m.
Dear Brown Community,

Providence police announced late on Sunday night that they have released the individual they had detained in connection with the investigation into the shooting on the Brown campus on Saturday, Dec. 14, which claimed the lives of two Brown students and injured nine others. The Rhode Island Attorney General stated definitively in a news media event hosted by the City of Providence that “there is no basis” to consider the released individual a person of interest.

Law enforcement agencies continue to investigate, and local police have advised they do not believe there is any immediate threat to Brown or the local community.…”

It really doesn't add up.

The cops supposedly found him because his phone was located in the neighborhood/block during the time of the attack. They say he was not a registered student at Brown, yet his linked in profile and his friend say he was enrolled in the college. He has guns, in a nearby hotel. People in Rhode Island don't have guns. That in itself it is really weird. RI has one of the lowest rates of gun owndership in the US. He's from Wisconsin. What the heck is he doing in Providence, if he isn't enrolled at Brown? What was his phone doing on College Hill, outside the engineering building? That's not a tourist spot.

Yes, they released him, but that doesn't mean they won't be charging him later, if they get more evidence. I think he's the guy.

Yes - one guy was initially misidentified. The one that the police detained is the one who was in a hotel in RI, whose LinkedIn Profile said he was studying at Brown this semester as a transfer student, and who also "Successfully passed Sniper Training, becoming the only private in my unit with B4 ASI".

I mean, if the guy isn't a suspect, of course I don't want him to have his life ruined by suspicion.

But saying "there's no basis" means "there's no evidence". There are other things you could say if it was just a case of mistaken identity.

He's pretty clearly no longer a suspect. I mean, come on

I believe in the small portion of the press conference tonight that I caught they were unwilling to talk about whether the person of interest was exonerated. Didn’t seem like they were ready to go there. But I didn’t hear the whole thing. Anyone catch it?

They did not say “has been cleared.”

That's what it sounds like to me.

Officials did not have enough evidence to prosecute, police chief says

Officials had evidence, but not enough to prosecute anybody, Police Chief Oscar L. Perez, Jr. said Sunday night.

A tip had come in, Perez said, and the FBI “followed through with it, and they ended up coming and locating this individual of interest.”

That evidence was examined, and ultimately the person was released, he said.

The reversal is a normal part of the investigative process, said Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha.

“I’ve been around long enough to know that sometimes you head in one direction and then you have to regroup and go in another and that’s exactly what has happened over the last 24 hours or so,” he said.

“It’s fair to say that there is no basis to consider him a person of interest,” said Neronha of the man who was detained. “So that’s why he’s being released.

And the police could say that, right? They could say "We are so sorry, we were wrong. This person clearly isn't the killer. And therefore the killer is still out there, so be on alert."
