| That's all I want to say. I don't have faith although I have a fondness for the religion I was raised with. I believe in a moral order. If your faith guides and supports you, that's terrific. We don't have to be at odds. |
|
We are not at odds. The only people at odds with people who claim differing beliefs about spirituality are fundamentalists. I am a person of faith, although my spirituality is more New Thought. I think Kindness is my Religion.
Wishing you peace today

What's "moral order"? |
I believe there are moral truths, such as the immorality of murdering a human being is most circumstances, and I, like many, do not think you need a supreme being to hand down these truths. Some people call it external moral order. Just as 1 + 1 = 2 doesn't require someone to make it so and just as it isn't opinion but truth. Determining moral truth can be hard, of course. |
| Thanks for the note, OP -- you may not have faith, but you're sweet! |
We do if people use their religion to take away my freedoms. |
|
I feel the same way. I love learning about new religions but I feel people are so defensive about theirs including atheists.
You believe X, I don't .. okay I believe Y, you don't .. okay i am not trying to change your mind, you are welcome to change mine (I love to hear other sides of things) but don't get so emotional. |
Which of your freedom's have been taken away by a religion? |
I'm guessing she's pissed she can't use abortion as birth control. Except, oh, wait, she can. |
+1. That line about "religious people taking away my rights" is getting old. Sure there is a small, vocal minority that wants to change abortion laws. But they always get outvoted by Christians and members of other religions who favor choice. Such selective thinking. |
Exactly. And I'm a Christian and pro-life, but let's get real, even if I had the vote on things like that, it won't affect the status quo - so get over it. I might disagree with your values, but I cannot actually do anything to prevent your actions. |
OP here. I don't care what the "source" is if someone wants to deny my freedoms. |
Relax, no one's denying you your freedoms. |
The right to assisted suicide just went down in MD and the main opposition was religious. |
| Religious belief leads to people talking social/policy positions they wouldn't otherwise take. Religions are big bodies of beliefs, many of which involve how other people should act and be treated. So it is absolutely legitimate to hold an opinion on whether other people's religious beliefs are good or not. Plus, how hypocritical to belong to a group that holds that non-adherents burn in hell, then take offense when a non-adherent says he doesn't think much of that belief system. |
