Political Discussion
What? I never said they were very fine people - I said they are sensible centrist types and not extremists. They simply Want the indiscriminate response by IDF to stop and for more humanitarian support for the innocent Palestinians. They also condemn Hamas’ actions but don’t think Israel’s scale of response is justified. It is in no one’s interests to continue down this extreme path. Many Jewish friends in DMV are also horrified by the scale of devastation visited upon Palestinians / all while not approving of Hamas and wanting Israel to survive. It is bizarre to refer to anyone who disagrees with IDF’s military tactics as anti semitic. |
If some of the virulent Zionists in America are thrown in, too, I'll support that deal and gladly contribute to the financing. What a dream! Peaceful Jews, Christians, Muslims, people of every other faith, agnostics, atheists, and I'm sure I'm missing someone, but all free to live in peace. Free of Hamas, free of Likud, and free of all those who only know how to obstruct world peace. |
I’d hire a lawyer. I wouldn’t murder them. You? But that’s really a distraction from the main point: You are arguing (1) that Israel shouldn’t have been created, and (2) that the Palestinians were (are?) justified in using violence to oppose that creation. Right? |
And when the court system rejects your claim over and over again, how would you handle that setback? For the next 75 years, enduring endless abuses by your new landlord with no relief in sight? I have to admit, I truly enjoy the idea of you squirming to reconcile how you would supposedly take your grievance to the court system "like a civilized adult" whilst defending Israel's prosecuting of its grievance by killing 24,000 (and counting) people with warplanes and bombs. Why didn't they just hire a lawyer? As for what I think, I absolutely think Israel should not have been created in the Middle East, and certainly not as a "Jewish state". I'm also opposed to Islamic states, for the record. The plan had (and continues to have) no long-term prospects for success. But Israel is there, and both Israel and its neighbors have the burden of making it all work, somehow. As an American who isn't brainwashed by propaganda that U.S. strategic interests will always necessitate supporting Israel with welfare, I don't really care how they work it out, as long as I'm not forced to watch my country fund one side of it so disproportionately. It's like living in a country that supports the favorite over the underdog - who supports that? |
I'm not the PP but Oct 7 wasn't a "grievance". It was an act of war and Israel responded. Is there something confusing about that? |
I actually shouldnt say act of war since it was more complicated - asymmetrical terrorism by a standing, elected government? Anyway, Israel responded by declaring war on said government. It wasn't a "grievance" though - it was an effective, bloodthirsty attack. |
I didn’t refer to anyone as anti-Semitic. But it’s clear that many of the protesters openly support violence, including (astonishingly) violence against the US. Waving the Houthi flag while they’re firing missiles at US troops? Celebrating the Hamas attacks (has happened repeatedly at the protests)? The former is treasonous and the latter grotesque. So let’s not pretend that the people at these rallies are peace-loving centrists—they’re anti-American radicals accompanied by some useful idiots from the far left. And I say this as a centrist who deplores much of what the IDF has done. |
This is most likely fake news - I did not attend the protests but friends who did said it was peaceful and the news last night had a lot of coverage. I did not see what you are talking about. |
Another 500 words to say: 1. Israel never should have been created. 2. Palestinian terrorism is justified. 3. Supporting Israel isn’t in US interests (though you can’t articulate why). Got it. |
Plus the people I know who attended the protest never usually attend protests. They are just regular people who want the indiscriminate violence to end. No one i know is defending Hamas … |
Definitely not fake news—the pro Hamas rhetoric at these protests has been widely documented by reputable media. And the pro Houthi protest in NYC after the US strike was also reported by MSM. Your friends are seeing what they want to see. |
I don’t doubt your friends’ intentions. I agree that the Israeli tactics have crossed the line in many respects. But I also don’t put my head in the sand about the motives of many of the protesters. I wouldn’t ally with those people under any circumstances. |
As an atheist, I'm wondering if God gave land to anyone else? |
I was just another attack in a decades-long conflict. Stop being so sensitive. |
As an atheist you'll find it interesting that "God" in this case was probably just an Egyptian Pharaoh. |
