Brown students & advocacy vs schoolwork

Brown isn't the only school that is discussing this issue. That said, we are still applying in the fall. Yale too.

I wonder if anyone will take the same approach Harvard did when confronted with a similar issue involving performing arts: make it a major.

Ha. I believe that the "racist" columns referenced in the piece pertained to a well-reasoned column questioning race-based affirmative action and an analytical piece on Christopher Columbus and Columbus Day. Apparently these free speech discussion of ideas were considered "microaggressions" (maybe "macroaggressions") that were too threatening for certain fragile wallflowers who considered their "safe spaces" invaded. Ah, the folly of youth.

And the "folly of youth" has been a right of passage for decades at universities all over the country. Ever heard of Berkeley?

I couldn't help smile when I read the bolded remark. DC just finished a paper on the civil rights movement where the three African-American students who tried to integrate a southern college were repelled because one of the reasons was certain fragile wallflowers in attendance considered their "safe space" invaded.

I guess fragile wallflowers have been around for some time.

What do these people plan to do after college to support themselves? Seriously. I read the things these students say and am baffled at why they have this kind of opportunity--the time and the financial support to attend full-time college--yet, aren't apparently using it to prepare for adulthood and a career. Talk about privilege.

Maybe they'll go into advocacy, law, community organizing, journalism, non-profit sector, teaching, psychology, public health, politics, the arts, government....

We need more than doctors, lawyers, pharmacists, engineers, bankers, and consultants.

See, this would never happen to my kid, because I would stop paying tuition the minute he stopped making his education his first priority.

We just aren't rich enough to pay for an education he isn't using. Other people can worry about the world's problems. Or my son can -- but not on top of tuition.
