Do u exercise early in the AM before work?

If so, when do you eat breakfast? Before or after exercising? If after, then do you find you have enuf energy while running, working out?

Definitely eat after or else you'll barf. If you need some quick energy before, drink a small cup of juice.

I usually eat a banana or half of a pb & j and also drink a small cup of coffee before running in the morning. Couldn't get out the door without some food in my stomach, and wouldn't have enough energy to cover 1 mile, let alone 3 or 4. I've never barfed when running. Everyone's different, so just try it both ways and see what works for you.

I have to eat a little before I exercise, usually a small banana or some dry cereal (no milk). I have my "real" breakfast after.

I have an apple and a glass of water on my way out the door, and exercise at the gym at work. I eat breakfast and drink coffee after.

If running 4 or fewer miles, no breakfast but a few sips of H2O or gatorade. If going on a longer run, I try to eat a tiny bowl of cheerios or 1/2 a bagel about 10-15 minutes before I go outside.

the 'energy' thingy is a myth. your body will fuel the workout just fine with an empty stomach. that's what 'fat' are for. it's actually the best time of day to burn fat. just drink plenty of water before, during and after.

I eat after working out. It's different for different people. But especially I don't want to have to do anything else before working out or I'll convince myself not to go. But then I go at 5 am and I'm not hungry yet. On the other hand, dh would never go in the morning with me. He has to have breakfast first.

Does the early AM workout work for you guys? I am considering doing it. Would be at about 6am. Seems so early but it would be great to get it done. What time do you all go to sleep??? And what time in the day do you CRASH (as in fall asleep at desk!)

Actually it is not a myth, esp. if you're workout is going to be more intense or a longer routine (like a long run).

Agree. Usually nothing on shorter runs but a little something on longer runs.

This. If under 5k, I feel much better heading out with nothing but water. Any longer than 5k and I eat first. I don't like to eat when I first wake up, but do it anyway b/c I've really felt the difference on longer runs. What I have: either 1/2 a banana, a small bowl of applesauce, or an oatmeal packet made with water.

Sorry to hijack this thread but it is somewhat related:
I am trying to run more in the am but find that my muscles are really stiff. I walk about 5 minutes to the trail which gives a little warm up but not enough and my muscles don't feel warm enough to stretch. So when I run I feel really creaky. I don't have this problem when I run later in the day, my legs feel great then.

Any strategies for getting more warmed up?
