For example, can a Immersion kid from say, SSIMS or Westland, feed to BCC or even RM with simply a COSA?
Thanks in advance! |
It depends on the school. At the moment Westland kids in immersion can go to BCC. SSIMS is in the down county consortia. DCC kids can automatically go to the DCC they are zoned for but can through the choice program apply to another DCC school. Since immersion kids are possibly not zoned for Blair but another DCC school or not any DCC school at all things are different. Those who are zoned for another DCC school can apply to Blair through choice in the first round, those who are not zoned for a DCC can also apply to choice but only after the second round. |
| Other than Rock Creek Forest immersion students who are allowed to go to Westland and then BCC (for now), I am unaware of any other instance where immersion students enjoy some kind of "automatic" benefit to attend the high school of their choice. PP is correct about the DCC choice process, but immersion students certainly don't have any advantage over any other student. |

What about the students in Chinese immersion? They go to Hoover middle, right? Then are they allowed to go to whatever high school Hoover feeds to with a COSA if they don't live in that cluster?

Ughhhh. The immersion/magnet program is such a mess. I don't begrudge the RCF kids the Westland feeder status, but I do wish the whole system had more transparency and consistency. The system as it stands is such a patchwork. Some magnet programs (TPMS) reserve seats for kids in the zone, so for two elementary schools, but other magnet programs don't. Some immersion programs have automatic feeder rights, some don't. Some programs say that they favor kids from rich schools. It's all such a mess. |
I don't have an first hand knowledge of what goes on here but I've heard that they don't automatically go to Churchill. Why it would be okay for Westland kids but not Hoover kids is beyond me.... But again its only what I've heard. If I was a parent of a kid in Hoover's immersion program I would certainly try and submit a COSA. |
Programs are different because many are locally grown and developed. Not every community is the same nor should they be. |
It's all one school district. No reason for there to be locally grown and developed programs. It's not equal that TPMS local kids get 25 spots and Eastern local kids get zero. |
I agree, and I'm in-bounds for TPMS (although with kids for whom the magnet would be a terrible fit). All this tells me is that some constituencies have more "pull" than others. I mean, why would being from a wealthy school get you preferred status at a highly competitive magnet? I know they want to diversify low-income schools, but a straight-up competition would still benefit kids from wealthier families because their parents have more resources to help kids prep. So you take kids who already have more advantages, and then give them affirmative action for competitive programs? |
There's also no reservation for RCMS kids at either of the RCMS magnet programs, as far as I know. |
I would say for a test in program, preference be given to no one. Immersion I can see local kids getting spots automatically at some schools and others not. It depends on how the program started initially. |
I didn't know that. It seems like there should be no preference for a test in program and TPMS is seemingly the only one that has a preference. |
I think the reason why TPMS has a preference is because the middle school is located in City of Takoma Park and there are political/tax implications for reserving the 25 spots. |
| Why are there tax implications? |
| No, once your immersion is completed (except for Rock Creek) you go back to local school. You need to apply for a COSA. It was denied for my friend. The kids all break up and go their separate ways. Take that into consideration. My friend did not. |
