Meaning Takoma Park residents pay higher taxes and want something valuable in return to justify the cost. Hence access to a 9 rated school. Just a theory! |
I am also wondering why there would be City of Takoma Park tax implications for Montgomery County Public Schools to have 25 extra magnet spots for TPMS kids. |
Doesn't make sense. It's one school district. That is NOT what TP taxes go toward. |
City of Takoma Park residents pay higher taxes for services from the City of Takoma Park, including City of Takoma Park police, City of Takoma Park library, City of Takoma Park recreation, City of Takoma Park planning, City of Takoma Park road maintenance, and City of Takoma Park solid waste management -- but not City of Takoma Park schools, because the schools are Montgomery County Public Schools. |
So...why do RCF kids get to continue? What's the historical justification there? |
I understand that--what I mean is that it is political. The school is located in TP--the residents used their influence to hold the seats to make themselves feel better about paying more taxes. |
Are you saying TP residents have more political power than residents near Eastern? So basically the affluence of TP residents buys them something other MoCo residents are denied? |
| Potomac reserves the majority of program for in boundary kids. Only a handful of kids are allowed in the program from out of bounds. Good thing, who could afford the 5th grade "field trip" to China if you live out of boundary. |
In that case, given that there are no additional seats for Chevy Chase students at the HGC at Chevy Chase ES, one can infer that the residents of the Town of Chevy Chase either a. feel just fine about paying additional municipal taxes, or 2. don't have any influence. Right? |
The fifth grade at the Chinese immersion program at Potomac ES goes on a school field to China? Of course, Rolling Terrace ES also reserves the majority of its immersion program for Rolling Terrace ES kids... |
Good point. The TPMS preference is illogical and seems to be the only test-in program with preference for in-boundary kids. The other ones mentioned are immersion. |
| The trip to China is not a "field trip". It is an optional trip for any of the immersion students in the 5th grade and their families. By the way, most of the high schools and some middle schools in the county offer spring break trips to various countries organized by a school sponsor, but they are all optional. |
Does anybody not go? |
|
I am confused. Is the PP saying there is a preference for Takoma Park residents for the Takoma MS magnet, or the elementary magnet? Because I've heard such a thing with regards to the elementary magnet, but never the middle school magnet program. Is this indeed true?
Also, as for OP's original question, for the DCC language immersion programs in French and Spanish, the kids can continue on to SSIMS regardless of their home school to continue receiving partial immersion instruction, but there is no preference that I'm aware of for high school. |
Yes, approx 20-25 seats are reserved in the TPMS magnet program for in-boundary students. That is in addition to the 100 spots for everyone else. So the actual magnet class size is 120-125. Guess it's good to live in Takoma Park. |
