Another "safety" PK-3 question

Anonymous
We're in-bounds for Ross so not too likely we'll get in. Any suggestions for a safety school that isn't Garrison? Presumably we will have a very minimal chance of getting into the schools with a decent reputation close to us (Seaton, SWWFS). All the charters are so far away and inaccessible by transit that they really aren't an option for us. Sadly, we only have 3 schools on our list. Marie Reed going to Petworth next year takes that one out of the running. Been to a bunch of open houses and starting to feel a little despondent. Any insight appreciated!

From Dupont- you can take the bus up to Columbia Heights and do AppleTree.

Thanks, thought about that, but a little concerned about the neighborhood. My child was at the park at 15th and Girard when shots were fired there at 12pm on a Tuesday. Still shaken by that so steering clear.

HD Cooke - have friends who are happy with the preschool

Appletree Columbia Heights

Thomson or Cleveland might be worth a slot, if you have them to spare.

Where do you work? You could also put down Capital Hill Montessori at Logan, if one parent works on or near the Hill/Union Station

Thomson's open house wasn't great. The kids basically have recess in a parking garage and for a 3 year old the whole point of life is to play outside. We're going to the Cleveland open house next week. Appletree is out per my comment above. We work in Dupont and Chinatown so the hill unfortunately doesn't work.

But thanks very much, will look into HD Cooke further!

IF you are concerned about your child's safety in Columbia Heights during school hours, you aren't ready to educate your kid in DC.

Agree you should keep the child with the nanny and ready your house for sale.

You're probably going to have to sacrifice some of your demands or such with a private daycare/preschool. You're guaranteed access in K.

Hey, uh, did you read that my child was actually present in the park there while shots were fired? Yeah, if risking death what it takes to educate your kids in DC then I'll start reading up on home schooling.

Also open to suggestions here. I'd be looking for a part time, cheaper option. Just something to give my kid some structure and interaction.

I'm not the PP, and I don't mean to be glib about something like that. But you either need to work past that, or likely find a private option.

We all face the same risks in areas like that. Your situation isn't more risky. If it matters, we've been in a similar situation.

Huh? Isn't it actually more risky to attend school in a neighborhood with gun crime during daylight hours? I've lived in this city for 15 years and have become pretty comfortable with most risks of city living and I love it here. But my kid being within a few yards of a man waving a gun and firing shots is not something I'm willing to "work past". So yes, maybe we don't get to attend a DCPS but would love suggestions of schools we may be overlooking that are not Appletree. And I'm very, very sorry if you've been in a similar situation since that absolutely shook me to the core.

You understand that this is very common for city schools. Playgrounds on the roof top, crossing major roads to the public playground etc.
If you live in DuPont, and not willing to go off of a small range you do not have many options.

FYI - I do not think Cooke is a Safety. I think your best shot is SWW FS since the IB zone is pretty small (WRT residential living with children)

What I mean is that your child being in Columbia Heights is not more risky than my child being in Columbia Heights.

I'm not suggesting you do or don't get past it. That's your business. I'm just saying that some of us who are able to work past it have more options available.

Sorry, I don't have info on private options. Other forms may be better starting points than the DCPS one.
