Can anyone help recommend a beach vacation for my very picky husband!
We are looking for something close to a city in case we want to do day trips. (?charleston) He had rejected all the ones I have personal experience with: Hilton Head (too crowded during the summer), Isle of Palm (not built up enough to be interesting), Sea Island (looks too corporate and resort oriented) Does a beach exist that will have non beach activities (tennis, restaurants, day trips), is not insanely crowded, but isn't a total resort experience. We love vacations to bed and breakfasts in the Ashville area - beautiful, natural feeling, luxury available but not all consuming, and I think he's trying to capture that feel in a beach vacation. - but he's driving me crazy! |
| Sounds like you should go offseason somewhere. |
| I can think of only one. Malibu. |

I think when someone has lots of "no's" but no "yes's" then it's time for THAT PERSON to come up with some solutions.
It's easy to find something wrong -- give him the job of finding something that is right for you both. |
OP here. You are all spot on! We've had some great off season vacations to Hilton Head. But it will be crazy crowded in July. And, yes, just last night I suggested he come up with some options. However, after 10 years, I know how that will go and he will wait until the very last minute when options will be limited, I have trouble scheduling the rest of the summer, Etc. I've suggested he look at kiawah today. I've never been there, but it looks like they have options beyond the main resort. |
| What about San Juan? Should be able to find someplace to stay that meets your vibe, lots of non-beach possibilities, and I think summer is off-season. |
| Seabrook. |

I'll check out Seabrook.. Thanks. I can't believe I forgot one of the biggest constraints... We have to be able to drive there. Reasons are multiple and not that relevant. |
| Old Orchard beach in Maine |
| how far is he willing to drive? |
8-10 hours is fine. Not ideal, but fine. We can always split up the drive. |
| Kiawah is pretty much just like Sea Island. Both are lovely, and not just 'resort' or 'corporate'. You can rent self-catering type accodomodations at either place, and have easy access to Charleston or Savannah. |
| We rented a very nice house in Sea Pines on HHI in August and we were far down from any of the densely-developed areas that we had a great stretch of beach basically to ourselves, but could still bike/drive over to the shopping center, Harbor Town, etc. |
| Amelia Island has some good lodging options? |
