I am looking to move the family to Silver Spring in the next couple years, and I'm wondering if people can recommend their neighborhood. Ideally, we would be in an area with decent schools, quiet streets where there are other young-ish families, and super-ideally I'd love a ranch style home with a garage. We aren't looking for something fancy or large, 3 bedrooms is fine, but definitely a single family rather than a townhouse. Oh, and I'm not a fan of Georgia Avenue. I know this is probably asking for a lot, and I'm certainly willing to compromise in some areas if we find a house and neighborhood that we love.
Thanks!! |
| Friends live in Woodmore, (near four corners, they have lots of neighbor-friends with kids! Seems very friendly when we go over for BBQs, etc. Lots of Cape cod style...not sure how many have garages... |
| Curious about why you're looking specifically at Silver Spring. |
| Rock Creek Forest has a number of ranch homes |
| We live off of E. Randolph Road and New Hampshire Ave...basically in between New Hampshire Ave and 29 (Colesville Rd.) It's an awesome area and the schools are amazing! |
| Woodside |
| Woodmore is awesome but the school are iffy. My girlfriend lives in White Oak and is very happy. There are a lot of areas off Randolph that are nice as well. |
| We live in Downtown Silver Spring -- the area near the Whole Foods which is rougly between Wayne Avenue, Colesville Road, and Fenton Street -- and love it. There are about four neighborhood playgrounds in that area, plus Sligo Creek Park, and tons of families with little kids. A great neighborhood listserve. Schools are fine and are getting better all the time. |
We're in Woodmoor. Our child is not school age yet, so I have no first-hand experience, but many of the neighbors seem happy with the schools. Just looking at the statistics, I would say the schools in the White Oak area are more iffy than the schools in Woodmoor, but again, that's without first-hand experience. |
| If you're planning to stay by the time your child hits high school, you will have opportunities for magnet programs and such so that you won't necessarily be "stuck" with the local high school. |

We live in Forest Estates - neighorhood across from Forest Glen Metro and down the street from Holy Cross Hospital.
We love it because we can walk to the red line in about 15 minutes, the neighborhood is really pretty, very walkable with sidewalks, and has tons of young families. We are steps away from the trails at Sligo Creek, and have a ton of parks and playgrounds within walking distance or right near us. We are a 10 minute drive from downtown SS. Our elementary school is awesome, high school not so great - hoping for change in 14 years but if not I guess we will re-evaluate! |
| PP, here - the one in Woodmoor. I would add that Woodmoor is a great family neighborhood - we've been really happy there. It's also an incredibly beautiful neighborhood - lots of trees and well-tended gardens and landscaping. Not too many ranch homes though, and not too many garages. However, it's a bit cheaper than the prices in more proper downtown Silver Spring, with about the same quality of schools (at least going by the testing stats). The further up Rt. 29 you go, the more you get for your money and there are a lot of lovely ranch style homes in the Burnt Mills area. There are also a lot of ranch and split-level homes in the neighborhood on the west side of colesville rd, right before University Blvd - not sure of the proper name of the neighborhood or what the neighborhood itself is like. If you mention your price range, we can give you more targeted suggestions. |

I live in Forest Estates and second the previous poster.
But, it and many of these other neighborhoods do not have the kind of house you are looking for. And for the best high school you probably want to be in Blair or BCC. |

OP here - thanks for all the responses! To the poster who asked why Silver Spring, it is to stay in Montgomery County but make a commute to College Park more bearable (we are currently upcounty). Any other suggestions for areas would certainly be welcome, but I do think we want to stay MoCo rather than go PG.
Price range - I would say $500,000 or under but would consider looking up to $600. To the Woodmoor poster(s?), that happens to be the one neighborhood I am familiar with, due to knowing several people who live there. It is a wonderful family atmosphere, exactly what I'm looking for in that regard! |
| Kensington is definitely commutable to College Park, so you might want to look there as well. |
