Hairstyle for hair that always looks bad

Anonymous
I have really bad hair. It's limp and fine, and doesn't hold a style. It also has a natural wave and frizzes in the summer. If I let it air dry, half of it goes into a wave/curl, and half of it is straight, so not an attractive look. I usually flat iron it, but I can never get the back straight. Flat ironing is the only way my hair looks okay, but never great.

I wear it shoulder-length for the most part, in a layered hairstyle.

Additionally, I'm brunette with 30% gray, so I have to color frequently otherwise I have noticeable roots.

What hairstyle would you suggest for hair like this, that always looks bad? I don't have a ton of time, I have two kids under 3, so I prefer minimal styling/maintenance.

The only time my hair ever looks good is right after I go to the salon.

I'm tired of always looking frumpy, and I never look put together. My hair is a big part of that.

I don't think the style/cut is your problem, I think it is your styling methods. You really need to blow dry and round brush, not flat iron. You can also use a micro-crimper to add volume (look for volumizing crimper, usually have to order on amazon) and/or a product like Rock Star volumizing powder.

I have limp and fine hair as well, and can't let it air dry or it looks like shit. I had to watch a bunch of youtube videos to learn how to properly blow dry with a round brush, and it makes a massive difference. Flat ironing makes it even flatter to my head. The round-brushing will take care of the wave/curl.

Once you get it down, round-brushing when drying maybe takes 5 minutes more than just blasting the hair.

Also, because of time constraints, I had to get to where I only wash my hair every other day. That was hard at first with fine/limp hair, but I stuck with it and now only wash every other day and use dry shampoo on the off days. Get a good shower cap, I picked up one at Walmart that has plastic on the outside and terry cloth on the inside and really like it more than just plastic. A good shower cap is also much bigger than the cheapies which is key.

My hair is similar. I wear it in a ponytail or a French braid (which I have to rebraid by noon because it frizzes and strands fall out). I can't stand wearing it down. I know it doesn't look great but it is what it is and thus far has not hindered my career or romantic prospects. I figure eventually I will have to find something else to do with it, but for now, ponytail is it.

If you can pull it off, a really short cut (a la Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby) can be super chic.

I have hair like that and either keep it short (pixie when I was younger, bob now) or put it up every day.

have you thought about doing the brazilian straigtening? (or Keratin?)

its spending, but if you wash it and then just blow dry, it will fall into place.

I did the japanese straightening when my kids were that young and I have thick long hair and it felt too flat for me. but it was awesome. I would shower and air dry and end u with perfect, stick straight here, no blow dryer necessary.so I am going try the keratin. Its && but if you divide over the few months it lasts and also add a value to your time flat ironing, etc its worth it.

Also consider the hardness of your water. I have your hair type and it looks a million times better when I stay at my parents' where the water is soft. We're in the process of putting a whole house water softener at the moment - can't wait!

Also, thise big heated rollers you can get on Amazon are helpful.

I agree limp/fine you need to blow dry. Get a cut that plays up the waves to give you volume. Cut right above shoulders or shorter.

+1

I have been fighting this for about 6 years. My hair is long, but just sits there. I am finally ready to admit that at 37, long hair isn't going to work for me anymore. I also have hereditary thinning at the temples that does not bode well for long hair styles...realizing why my mom cut her hair (and has never looked back) around the same age.

Shave it off and buy a wig made with real hair. My sister did this and it makes her morning routine much less stressful!

I can't figure out how to use a round brush. The brush always gets really stuck in my hair. Can anyone recommend a particular Youtube video?

And will hot rollers do the same thing as a round brush, so I can just blow dry and then use rollers?

Is this a joke? It sounds crazy. Go to a great salon and ask for help or ask a friend for help. You could use really big soft rollers when you go to bed OP, electric curlers, or just twist your hair and put a bobby pin in when you go to bad. Undo when you wake up, turn your head upside down and shake. It should look great. I don't think layers work for frizzy hair if that's what you have.
