| DS goes to a RE school and it is a great fit for him personality-wise. Debating whether we should send him to public school or if we can find a private school with similar teaching philosophy. What did you do? |
| Look at Waldorf, Oneness and Acton DC - they all tie into the kind of experience you'll have had with Reggio. |
OP here: Those sound great! Anything similar in VA? |
|
Not sure where you are located, but the Montessori school of Oakton runs through 6th grade. We looked at it for our preschooler. The people who ran the school were lovely and the classes were nice and small. In the end we ended up somewhere closer to home, but I think it might be a good option for you.

PP here. You may want to check into the Eastern Ridge School (previously called Discovery Woods) in Vienna/McLean. I can't recall if they have programs beyond K or not.
Potomac Crescent Waldorf is in Alexandria has an elementary school. Burgundy Farm Country Day School is supposed to have a great outdoor setting, but I know nothing about its teaching philosophy. |
| Waterfront Academy is Montessori and has an elementary program. |
We did RE and then public. It was fine. K was a a bit of a tough transition. It is very regimented, that said I hear the transition is tough for most kids. DS is in 1st now and is really enjoying it. He is in the highest reading group so he has more flexibility in terms of what he reads about and what he gets to write about. Not the same as RE but the transition to public can work. DS goes to an immersion school so I think he moves around a bit more than kids in traditional schools with the same teacher for most of the day. Not sure if that helps. |
| There are Montessori public options in D.C. and VA. There is also Christian Family Montessori in NW D.C. that goes until sixth grade. |
OP here: Discovery Woods does not have a program for older kids anymore. |

No sure why you are lumping the three types of preschools together, given how different these approaches are. Forrest schools are definitely not like Montessori. We chose RE over Montesorri because of their differences. Do you just mean a shorthand for fancy preschool?
|
| I know nothing of forest school but I don't believe Reggio and Montissori have much in common other than being of Italian origin. |
more like polar opposite. |
|
yes, oneness is not reggio, it is purely montessori.
look at waldorf |
Ding ding ding ding ding. We have a winner! This is what drives me nuts about the folks who complain when their child's Montessori preschool does something that is totally in keeping with that pedagogy, like have the kids be in charge of their own snacks or toileting. Like, didn't you know when you signed up for it that this was an extremely hands-off approach? |
