Look on the over 50 board…this topic comes up often and a couple of months ago I posted some ideas (I'm a woman who just turned 50)

btw what I really wanted was leisure (time+no chores). So last weekend, my DH and I went to a hotel for three nights and we had our neighbor babysit our tween/teen kids. Honestly my DH was at first surprised because I really was exhausted and just wanted to sleep in (quiet room in quiet hotel). It was a lot of sleeping, eating, watching TV from bed (I never get to watch TV!), and then some romance after I felt not so tired. But I will tell you that as much fun as it was with him, I could have gone without him, because I just needed a break to recharge, and he was a little disappointed that we didn't make a movie, but I didn't want to "have to be somewhere at some specific time."

This was an expensive present, btw (hotel, meals, babysitter)

Now since we are all anonymous, I'll say that this hotel was also in my hometown, which is a resort town, but since I'm a local (even though I haven't lived there in 30 years) every time I go into town my mother puts me to work on her projects/errands etc. I just wanted to experience it as a tourist. So we went and didn't tell my mom. I've never stayed in the hotels, even, because of course we'd stay with my mom normally. It was heaven.

I would consider throwing her a non-surprise family dinner celebration, with a few of her friends and your extended family. Play the music of "her day" which is mine, too btw. Instead of gifts, have people bring a haiku which celebrates her or the occasion. Or gifts! But anyway, not a surprise unless you're SURE she would like it.

A sitter so I could get a weekend away would be wonderful!

I gave my sister a round trip ticket (coach) to Paris. She had to pick up the tab for everything else. She still loved it.
