Is Summer Residential Governor’s Schools a big deal?

I think the program is good. However my school draws names for who they nominate so it’s not really a fair selection process, just random.

Private or public? Do they do any screening first? Or is a kid with a B- in the class just as eligible for the lottery as the kid with an A+? It seems to me those kids would end up far less competitive at the state level anyway.
