| I see that DCPS has the last 2 weeks for winter break on the proposed calendar. However, with New Years Day on a Sunday, Jan 2 (Monday) will be a federal holiday. Does that mean that DCPS won't go back until Jan 3? |
That would be my guess. FWIW that's what Montgomery County is doing (although they are only taking a total of 6 school days off for winter break). http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/calendar/0376.16ct_ADOPTED2016-17_SchoolYearCalendar.pdf |
| That would kind of rock if the kids had to go back to school and the adults go another day of vacation! |
That's what I was thinking! But is there anything in the teachers' contract that says that federal holidays are off. |
DC city employees have Jan 2 off http://dchr.dc.gov/page/holiday-schedules |

Proposed key dates for 2016-17 school year - from the DCPS website:
First day of school: August 22, 2016 Winter Break: December 19, 2016 – December 31, 2016 Spring Break: April 17, 2017 – April 21, 2017 Last Day of School: June 14, 2017 First Day of Summer School: June 26, 2017 |
Dec 31st as end of break doesn't even make sense as its a Sat. Monday Jan 2 will be an official holiday. There will be no school. Bet $1000. |
|
It's absurd to get out of school an entire WEEK before Christmas. Why can't they follow MoCo and just give the 6 days off instead of 11?
Also, see that spring break is nearly the end of April. That's a loooooong stretch between winter and spring break. |
Agreed. |
Disagree. Our family likes it. Just because you like something one way doesn't mean everyone does and they should just arbitrarily change. It's not like we're the only school district that has two weeks. |
I like that we have two weeks of Winter break. I agree with you that end of April is too late for spring break ! |
Because Mont Co has 3 fall days off for Jewish holidays we don't. They can't afford a long winter break. I love it. My kids need the long break and I far prefer it to a day here and there. |
I used to hate two-week winter break, but now that my kids are a little older (late ES), I love it. They do need the break, and I love the slower pace of those couple of weeks. I LOVE the mid-April spring break. It's great if you travel--cheaper and so much less crowded. |
| Let's please all keep in mind these are proposed dates. Last year they also proposed an April spring break, and one look at the current DCPS calendar will show you what became of that. Don't go booking flights based on a draft calendar. |
