The Giant on Arlington Road in Bethesda stinks (really!)

No, don't get me wrong; I actually like the store. But when I walk by the area of the fish counter (next to the bathrooms) I truly feel like retching because the smell is SO BAD. And so I ask myself, "Why am I shopping here? It reeks of food poisoning.'

So I picked up my prescription and left.

What gives?

I hate that place the cashiers are so bad, they are dirty, they cough in their hand then handle your food.

Izzy Cohen would be rolling in his grave if he saw what his store turned into by this company the family sold out to.

I shop there 5x a week and never noticed a smell there.

5x/week? You must spend a lot of money or have great control. I find that the more I go to the grocery store the more I spend money with impulse shopping.

It's not all the time, but that area always smells a little off to me. Then occasionally really rank, like around noon today.

I worry a lot about Izzy Cohen too.

I was there a month ago and walked away from my cart to pick something up in the meat section about 10-15 feet away. When I got back, I saw that someone had spilled a whole container of soup over everything in my cart including the pile of bags I brought in. I was shocked and had to redo all of my shopping all over again - I was 3/4 finished with my list. I complained to the manager and they were very surprised as well and apologized and gave me a few new shopping bags to replace the ones covered in soup. But - who does this kind of thing? It was so bizarre. I know this was a one of a kind weird thing, but I'm always very cautious shopping there now.

I also can't stand that the check out people never bag your groceries there any more. They are so slow that they wait for you to bag your own groceries while they are still ringing things up. If I were at Shoppers and paying a lot less for my groceries I wouldn't mind, but I feel like I'm paying top dollar there. I'm really looking forward to the new Bethesda Harris Teeter to open up.

When does the new Harris Teeter open? This spring or do we have to wait longer?

I feel like they've made some improvements to the store lately and there are some great employees there, but it is just a difficult place.

+1 on the bagging issue. It is so frustrating and passive aggressive. I hope a manager reads this thread.

fish and shit don't mix. this is in every store I go to. Someone is always smelling up the place.

I live close to there and it really sucks. But so do ALL of the grocery stores in the area including NW DC. We just don't have nice stores around here.

I have to go out to Loudoun Co. a couple of days a week for work, and while I would not want to live that far from the city, I have such grocery store envy!! Wegmans, Harris Teeter, Whole Foods - all rock. And the new Whole Foods near Lansdowne has a full bar! Maryland liquor laws suck!

I do a lot of my grocery shopping after work in Loudoun. I try to avoid this Giant at all costs.

I agree; this store is terrible and the lady in the Bakery is so rude if you try to ask a question or place a special order. I prefer the newer Safeway on Bradley.

So true! I was also thinking of the newer Safeway on Bradley, but then you are dealing with a horrible parking garage and elevators. Being from VA, there is just something so wrong about stacked up grocery stores and Targets with escalators and elevators and parking garage. Just another way more urban living is more of a head-ache in some ways.
