I ask because I had an experience at the store this morning. I was behind a man who had a big pile of groceries. It took forever for him to bag the groceries. There were lines everywhere and a big one behind us. I waited until he was almost done bagging but not quite. So, my tinfoil bumped into his groceries left to be bagged. He was so mad and threw the tin foil back at me. Which of course, upset the sensors.
I try not to do self check out when I have a lot of groceries myself so perhaps I was being passive aggressive by starting when he wasn't done. I can admit that but he was taking soooo long!. So, my questions: do you do self check out with a bunch of grcoeries? Are you annoyed when people do? Do you get mad if people start to do theirs before you are done bagging? Does it make a difference if it takes a long time? Just curious about non important stuff on a cold Saturday night! |
| I wait until they are done bagging. Those places used to have a plastic or wooden bar you could place across the top end of the bagging area, just so you could start before they were done. But I haven't seen them anywhere in quite awhile. Too bad. |
| I don't do self checkout when I have a lot of items because inevitably there'll be some issue with a barcode or something. Just my luck. I do NOT get annoyed when others do. That's their business and I just move on. I would get annoyed if someone started before I was done - I try to do my best to hurry and get out of people's way but I hate feeling rushed by others. I'd probably give you a look but wouldn't throw anything at you! |
Yeah, there is a bar you can put across if you are not done bagging but you can't move the bar if all your groceries are blocking it. One time a guy was impatient and his stuff came down before I was done so I pushed it aside, and he grabbed it and left, and I said I was sorry, but he was hot and said I was good. In your case, you got stuck with a grouchy jerk. I don't like doing self checkout when I have a lot, but I'll do it if no one is behind me when I start. Could you have gone to the express lane? I guess you should have waited unless you had like 1-3 items you could have grabbed. If you don't want to wait, then pick another line.

Unless the sign says that checkout lane is only for 10 items, 15 items, etc. I certainly do.
But I also find that I scan faster than most of the checkers because I am not paid for the time I spend weighing and swiping so I am motivated to move groceries as fast as possible, not chat. |

What a weirdo, op. No, I don't get mad if someone starts scanning their stuff while I'm still bagging. Not annoyed either. But throwing something? That guy needs to watch his temper. Let him try that to my husband and see how well he reacts lol.
They need order separators in the bagging area of self checkouts. I like Giant for their handheld scanners, makes the whole shopping trip go faster. |
I don't OP. AND I have had this same exact thing happen to me - also by a man. I think certain men are quite frustrated in this area, and just looking to act out. I will leave it at that. No, it's NOT you; and the people we mention make great entertainment. |
| I never start scanning until the person in front of me has completely finished and walked away. |
Same here. |
Same here. |

He THREW your aluminum foil at you?
Did he really throw it, or just toss it out of his bagging area? I think you were being a passive aggressive douche and now you're exaggerating to make your point. If you don't want to wait, don't queue up behind someone with a ton of groceries. Its not like you were behind him and his cart magically increased the number of items. You went in knowing it was for the long haul. Pick another line. |
+4 I personally find it pretty freaking rude to start scanning and sending your things down the chute when the person in front of you hasn't finished. As someone else noted, you were aware of the volume of their purchases when you selected the line. |

The separators at most self check-outs are no longer there. I think they were prone to break and never replaced.
When I have a big (more than 1 bag) load, I just bag as I go. It's a necessity since the bagging area will fill up otherwise, but the added benefit is when I finally go to pay, I'm all bagged up and on my way. |
| I think we should get a 10% discount for checking out our own items. |
| I hate those self checkout machines and avoid them at all costs. |
