| It seems like the bulk of this forum are highly educated people, so why so many posts from people who want to "loose" weight? |
|
because we can't all be perfect at everything and for some that means they really suck at spelling.
|
I am not defending that particularly egregious example of bad spelling, but I have found as I age, I make more and more mistakes (and I'm only in my 30s!). I am a former elementary spelling bee champ and spelling always came naturally to me. So, I try to be sympathetic to the other distracted and decaying once smart people
|
| Because we're posting in English, which is a non-phonetic language with ridiculous spelling. |
It irks me, but I think it has to do with the fact that most people have learned that the /oo/ sound is made with two o’s or combination of letters - like “ough” (through) or “ou” (you). The idea that the word lose can be pronounced as if it had two o’s makes people misspell it....... |
| I always assume it's people for whom English is not their first language... |
All of these things are true for many words that people learn to spell anyway. |
| The loose vs. lose issue in DCUM is annoying, but my major spelling/grammar issue on this site is the frequent use of the (not a real) word noone. People, "noone" is NOT a word! The correct form is no one. For the love of my poor OCD brain, please stop using noone!!! |
| Because they are idiots. |
LOL. They are faking the highly educated part ? Add in getting layed off being payed |
| Because "loose" is also a word and auto-correct: a) doesn't catch it and b) sometimes auto-completes the wrong word. |
And not a spelling mistake, but 'could care less' |
| I always figure there are lots of foreigners in DC. And also, iphones aren't the best. They often autocorrect between loose and lose. |
It should be, though. Nobody, nowhere, nothing, noone. |
I think Chaucer used "noone" for "noon"...and that makes more sense than using it for "nobody", etc. |
