Why do so many people spell "lose" wrong?

It's surprising how many people think "alot" is a word. And according to The Elements of Style, "alright" is not correct.

The Strunk and White version of The Elements of Style was published in 1959. Language changes.

Also I have never understood the idolatry of Strunk and White, but that's a separate issue.
