So in subscribing to the principle in Outliers, we are excited about the fact that our smart and engaging daughter will start preschool a year later due to her October birthday. We like her current learning environment at a small daycare but would like to see her challenged more in this gap year. What have others done during this gap year? What schools would you recommend in Alexandria?

If there is one in Alexadria I would look at the Goddard School. They have a really good reputation and they also focus on developing the whole child. Everyone I know who has sent their kids there for either pre-k or k were very happy. |
| I kept my Oct birthday child in a totally play based free choice nursery school and a slightly more academic but still play based immersion preschool. It worked out very well. |
| A "gap year" for a four-year-old? |
Using Malcolm Gladwell as a parenting expert to guide educational choices?? GET A GRIP before it is too late |
Well, that too, but if OP's child has an October birthday, there really isn't a choice anyway. |

Gap year? 4 year old?
I can't even. |

This literally made me LOL. A 4 year old Gap Year.
L O L |
| Send her backpacking in Europe. |
| I had two October bday kids, and they just went to preschool that year, in the "Fours" class. That's how preschool programs are organized--the age of kids in Sept when school starts. WTH are you talking about, a gap year? |
| I suggest either full-day gymnastics training - see the good boarding option here - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-T2PCAxL0gY , Czech immersion school, or building a house in West Virginia to cultivate some good manual labor skills and work ethic. |
| What about a full day jk like at Browne or SSSAS |
| Peace Corps. |
| October birthday kids don't need a gap yr since they'll be the oldest in the classroom when they are sent on time. |
| I love this thread. |
