Is your mcps school celebrating national ugly Christmas sweater day this Friday?

Apparently our school is...according to the Principal's newsletter.

My HS is next week as part of a spirit week. My son will not participate however as he does not own any sweaters!

This is an elementary school. My children don't have sweaters...much less ugly Christmas sweaters.

I thought they couldn't say Christmas???

My child's school is having "Ugly Sweater Day" on December 23. Maybe that's what your child's school is having, too?

The principal's letter says Ugly Christmas Sweater Day (or winter holiday sweater). Let's face it, it's a gaffe.

And what 6 year old has an ugly Christmas sweater? Is that even a "thing"?

So don't participate OP. No need for such outrage. Focus your energy on other issues.

Which does it say?

Christmas sweaters are a thing. (Christmas ANYTHING is a thing.) Ugly sweaters are a thing too, so I assume that ugly Christmas sweaters are also a thing, although probably not for six-year-olds.

In any case, even if the principal's letter doesn't/didn't say Christmas, I think that everybody knows what "holiday" and "winter holiday" mean -- which is why I've always been amused by the outrage about "happy holidays".

The whole concept is weird when it comes to elementary aged kids. The "ugly" when it comes to adult Christmas sweaters is something most kids love- over the top, kitschy, ornate. To a kid it's just a sweater with stuff they love on it. Rudolph with a light up nose? Yes please! And don't call it ugly!

Target is actually selling ugly Christmas sweaters..

The letter says:

Ugly Christmas Sweater Day (or other winter holiday)

It says Christmas.

I'm not sure why you think I'm outraged, pp. I'm not. I was just surprised to get something from school with the word Christmas on it...that's never happened before.

And I was struck by the concept for young kids. The ugly Christmas sweater concept is a throwback to the sweaters our moms and grandmothers wore in the 80s...and the ugly kitsch aspect evolved in the 90s. They don't make these sweaters for young kids, and it's not something they can fully appreciate. Just curious who came up with this for an elementary school? That's all. And curious if other elementary schools do this.

Ours isn't, but it's also a Focus School and the administration is very sensitive to any activities that might make the less privileged kids feel left out. Feeling like they need to buy a sweater they would only wear once definitely falls into that category.

Jimmy Fallon has brought back the fun in ugly Christmas sweaters.

It is a specific thing that really, really, really has zero to do with Christians and Jesus. They are silly, fun and about as secular as any part of the commercial cultural side of Christmas can be.

If you don't have one I would just have my kid make his own using a cheap Tshirt and a bunch of sparkly things from the craft store.

"Come on, Sally...let's pull out the glitter."

"Why?"

"Because you need to make an ugly Christmas sweater for school tomorrow."

"Why?"

"I don't know...apparently someone in the office or the PTA thought this would be fun for five year olds."

I don't understand how an ugly Christmas sweater could have zero to do with Christians and Jesus, what with being an ugly CHRISTMAS sweater.

Are you one of those people who thinks that there is a war on Christmas?
