Feedback about Duke Ellington?

Would love to know about people's experiences who have (or had) students attending this school. TIA!!

Close friend's kid is in 10th grade. Likes it a lot. The arts block is terrific with great projects, opportunities to build a great portfolio, etc. Teachers in the other subjects are a mix of strong and not so strong but getting better.

Decent range of honors and AP classes. Very long school day - all the regular classes plus 2-3 hours in the arts block. Temporary space is challenging and the students spend time in each campus every day and thus are carrying a lot of their gear (instruments, art supplies/easel, etc) all the time.

I know there's a lot of controversy about the renovation. Is the grand opening still on track for next year?

Great School! I have two children attending, and they really enjoy it. The academics are solid and the arts program is world renowned. As always, go visit the school, and make determination from there.

The school's governance situation is also world renowned.

Thanks! What are parents being told about the renovation completion and move-in? Also, do you know how many 10th graders are accepted?

Admittance in all grades depends on space available in the arts discipline your child plans to pursue and varies a lot year to year (e.g. if many theatre students are graduating from the theatre program they may accept a a few more the following year at 9th and perhaps 10th).

There is an open house at the school tomorrow.

About 10-15 sophomores are accepted. Go ahead and apply.

Move back to the R street building is 2017-2018 school year.

School is a very safe space, especially for artsy, quirky smart kids, gay kids. Very little bullying.

No sports after school but some kids play with Wilson teams.

I've been pleased with the mix of academics and arts. My DD has made amazing friends--I really like them. They are funny, clever, caring, have lived in other countries, speak another language at home. A real mix of kids, from all parts of the city.

No, she explained what it meant in the same line. No bullying of the socially awkward or of the gay. My kids look pretty talentless so far, but fingers crossed something takes hold and Duke Ellington is an option for them down the line.

Inclusive and liberal school. Nice and intelligent kids. Little or no bullying. Standard academics are good but not excellent, except for writing program.
