Meal delivery services

Anonymous
Have you tried meal delivery services -- either cooked or uncooked -- like Blue Apron, Scratch DC, or Power Supply?

Any tips or reactions? We are a family of 4 and I find some of the Power Supply hard to navigate for family-sized ordering.

Is prep for Blue Apron and Scratch DC relatively simple?

Thanks!

I really liked the blue apron food but each meal takes 45-60 mins to make. I didn't always have that much time so I cancelled after a few months. I wish it came pre-chopped

I have tried Healthy Bites and Hello Fresh. Healthy Bites didn't have enough food for me. I don't eat a lot either. Some of the meals were yummy, others were so-so. Hello Fresh required too much work, but I'm not used to cooking. I have been tempted to try ScratchDC, but it looks like you still have to do a little cooking with them. I really just want someone to deliver a meal I can put straight into the microwave or oven.

I use Blue Apron, it's okay. The recipes do take a while to cook and the portions are medium - I'd prefer larger portions for leftovers to not have to cook every night. The meals are alright, some are better than others. I'm vegetarian and wish that they had better sources of protein, they do a lot of pastas, salads, etc.; but I'm used to more bean based cooking.

I have had problems with some of their produce not staying fresh just a few days after delivery and the tortillas getting moldy within 3-5 days from delivery; tortillas should last a month or so. So I've had to replace some ingredients, which gets annoying.

Blue Apron's packaging is over the top.
I love to cook but their recipes take too long.
I canceled after a couple of weeks.

OP here. I signed up up try Blue Apron-- we get our first meals today. I'm hoping it'll be a way to get my husband to cook more than pasta, but if it's as time consuming as people say it might not work.

I also signed up for one meal from Scratch DC, to try it out. Looks like those meals are chopped, but it's much more expensive than Blue Apron. Not sure if it'll be worth it.

Healthy Bites was sold to Power Supply it appears. But it looks like their approach is pretty different.

Are there other options people know about?

I like Galley a lot. Kitch Kat is also good in the district.

I've tried Blue Apron, Hello Fresh and this past week Home Chef. For my husband, Blue Apron's flavors tended to be a little more 'exotic' than he likes - he's a plain vanilla eater. I liked what we got.

Overall I liked Home Chef the best but they all require just more time than I want to spend making dinner.

Try Dinner Done.

I sometimes order from peach dish. They are pretty much the same setup as blue apron. I like that you can choose the recipes you want, number of servings, and number of meals per week. That way I can pick a quick meal or two and one longer one for a Friday/Saturday.

We had done hellofresh for months and there were honestly too many salads. The prep time was also all over the place rendering their suggesting prep/cook time more or less useless.

You should check out Let's Dish. You can pick up ready-made meals, or prepare all of the ingredients in the store and bring them home for preparation later.

I honestly think blue apron's meals are delicious but I also cancelled due to the time it took to cook the meals. I found the estimates to be very off. I don't have 45 minutes to cook dinner every night with two young children. I did however ask for the cookbooks as a holiday gift because I really did love the meals. Their chicken piccata is the best I have ever had. I have remade the recipe 3-4 times now and it is always a winner.

I love ScratchDC. Really only takes 1/2 hour or less, I've liked every meal, and the portions are generous. It is expensive, which is why I don't use it more. But when I do use it, I don't regret it!

Dinner Done will prep the meal for you and deliver it to your door for $5. You can order a bunch in advance and keep them in your freezer, and the delivery fee is still $5. When I was on maternity, they saved me. Would just pop the foil main entree and sides in the oven and call it a day.
