It's tragic anywhere, but to see that the homeless rate in Hawaii increased by 46 per cent (!!!) from last year to this year is alarming. Thoughts?

I grew up homeless and the pictures make me sick to my stomach. I can't finish the article.

I hope you are doing better now.

I would be homeless if it wasn't for a really supportive family.

The cost of living is really high in Hawaii. I can see why people could easily slip into poverty and then into homelessness. It also has one of the highest drug use of the states. The economy is very tied to tourism too and if that lags from recessions or people being afraid to fly etc. that all can make a bigger impact.

Lots of people who are homeless, come to Hawaii on a one way ticket and never go back to their home country and state.

Hawaii is not exactly welcoming to everyone, for those of you who have not been. Ask anyone who has either been there or resided there.

Not sure if there is a parallel, but there is a huge homeless population in Santa Monica / Venice beach. The reason is the weather is good and the showers and bathrooms on the beach are free and usually pretty clean. There are also some sympathetic local laws about it being ok to sleep in public parks as long as there is no mess or trash left behind and all belongings are kept together, not scattered. And obviously, that sleeping is actually taking place.

Really? I have been there (big island) and didn't see anything unusual or the locals treating me poorly.

Waikiki is notorious for its large population of smelly, worthless panhandling bums.

Huh? You mean they don't have any money, but somehow buy a one way ticket?
You got any stats about that?

It must be so awesome that you are so bothered that you need to post to a DC based website.

Yes, outside of the tourist spots and resorts, Hawaii is full of trash.

Say hi to Dawg and Beth for me.
