Is a onesie an outfit?

MIL is scandalized that I've been dressing DS (9 mos) in onesies with no pants ("He's in his underwear!!"). I realize this is a moot issue given his age and the change in weather, but I was just curious if I've been getting it wrong all these months

His underwear is his diaper.

It is just a bodysuit/one piece clothing item. I never thought of it otherwise.

Not an outfit, sorry! Only time we didn't add shorts or pants was with these adorable thigh high socks but that was only at home. But honestly in the end, who cares, if you are happy don't worry about it!

What constitutes an outfit? Pants?

Is this an outfit:

I think it truly doesn't matter if your kid is dressed for the weather.

I have seen grown women in the midwest wearing adult onesies, so yes--it is an outfit.

does anyone remember when onesies were hot for a while in the 90s?

I remember my HS boyfriend was rather annoyed with those things. They did make access quite difficult.

I took my 1 year old in her stroller down to pick up her big sister on Friday with just a onesie on. Pants are a pain in the ass sometimes.

I did not consider a plain white onesie an "outfit", but I also had no problem keeping baby in just that on hot days or whatever.

I don't consider it an outfit. To each their own but I have never and would never do that. My rule of thumb is, would I wear that? Babies are people too. From birth I have fully dressed my son, especially when leaving the house, in a full outfit (tops bottoms, socks shoes bib) that match.

Op here. I'm always kind of impressed with moms like this. I'm totally lazy about this, AND LO is so squirmy.

Like the above PP I never took DS out in just a onsie. That said I don't think I have ever thought twice about what another baby was wearing...unless it was really cute.

Your MIL either needs to come over and dress your little one, or keep her comments to herself.

If it was a onesie that kept his diaper covered, it was fine to just wear that -- especially in DC heat and humidity! But if the diaper hung out, then I slipped lightweight pants or shorts on my son whenever we left the house.

Yup! Whenever she made a comment I would say "pants are in the middle drawer!"

Yes, a romper is fine, because it has little shorts that offer more coverage, but a onesie is not enough.
