IUI date?

Anonymous
Hi all! I'm starting my first IUI this month.

On day 12 it says I have an ultrasound and blood work to start my trigger shot. But after that it doesn't list any dates. What day would my IUI fall on? I was supposed to be out of town on a family trip with my inlaws on days 14-16 but I can skip it if needed (or drive back by myself). No idea what I'll say when inlaws ask why though.

I think they typically do the IUI day after trigger shot. but the day for the trigger shot is just an estimate, they will monitor you and tell you when to take it. could be later.

+1 Blood tests tell them when to do the IUI. It's OFTEN the next day, but it could be two or three days.

Thanks! We're just incredibly busy and I'm trying to fit everything in.

What day is the semen sample normally given on?

Depends on your trigger shot timing and your doc. It could easily be day 14 for the IUI (trigger night of the day 12, IUI 36 hours later) (in all of my 9 IUIs, this was how it went). Or day 13 (if you trigger at the doc in the morning of day 12, which if they're doing blood work I'd guess you probably wouldn't because bloodwork tells them about E2 levels, which in addition to follicle size tell them about maturity of egg and whether you're ready, and won't be back until the afternoon). Or you could not be ready (too small follicle, too low E2) in which case you'd come back on day 13 or 14, depending. Which gives you an IUI on day 14, 15, or 16. Without knowing more (like your clinic always does IUIs 24 hours after trigger, I'd say chances are high your IUI will be scheduled for the days you're planning to be out of town and you should probably call your doc to ask their protocol - whether they'd trigger in the AM or do IUI next day even if you trigger at night etc. Really depends on the clinic/doc and their standard. Semen sample given same day as IUI.

Thank you! This was very helpful! I'm with SG. I will bring a calendar to my appointment tomorrow and discuss further. We're only going 2 hours away with my in laws so I could potentially come back by myself.

DH's sample is required the morning of the IUI. SGF has him give his sample at home. It has to be at the clinic within 90 mins (?120 mins, I cant remember). Then after they treat it, 90-120 after, you they will transfer it into you.

This is the PP, I was with SG for most of these, I think they always do trigger night of, IUI 36 hours later (roughly), so I think soonest IUI you're looking at is day 14. Maybe you can get it in before you leave? Also look at where else they have clinics - depending on the day of the week, they may be able to see you at one a bit closer to where you're traveling, to cover the semen sample timing issue.

Thanks! We'd be leaving on the day of the 14th cycle day, so I could do it and then leave.

If I have to go late, does anyone have any good excuses for why I show up a date late? Something medical would be awesome. lol

Usually the IUI is 36 hours after the trigger. I never did them at Shady Grove, but at CFA, my partner would go into the clinic in the morning, we'd go get breakfast together, and then I'd go back for the insemination.

Just tell them that you're undergoing a minor procedure timed to your menstrual cycle that will help you have children. No one has to know the specifics.

Nope, I was serious. This will shut everyone up. If you're a partnered-up woman of child-bearing age, unless you've said you're going to live child free, there's an unspoken assumption that, gay or straight, you might want to have a baby with your partner before your fallopian tubes turn to dust and blow away.

Who is actually going to follow up to that, when you matter-of-factly say: I'm having a minor medical procedure timed to my menstrual cycle? You could skip the "that will help me have children" part. But no one, unless they're a medical professional curious about the actual procedure, is going to ask a follow up question about your period. Guaranteed conversation stopper. Not even nosy family will hound a woman who brings up her period. It's an immediate shut down of further intrusive questions, I promise.
