anyone know about the "Virginia Valor Fathers Day Fiesta" or the "FPYC Fathers Day Tournament"

My dc's team won Finalist medals and three broke while the coach was putting them on the players. He asked the Valor guy for replacements and was told he should have been more careful. They broke while he was passing them out!

So my review as a parent is that I wish our team could have played in the larger FPYC tournament, this one definitely had fewer participants. I wish the seeding/qualificiation process was better, but overall the tournament was run fine.

The Loudoun team only has 5 practices before the tournament. They don't practice together all season. The majority of the team does remain the same from season to season so the girls are familiar with each other.

Being the same from season to season seems really shady.

What I gather from the descriptions of this weekend’s tournament is that there were only 3 leagues that participated as “all star” teams and a handful of regular season rec teams that may or may not have been fully aware that they would compete against “all star” teams. Does that about sum it up? Only 3 all star teams per division? Wow.

For U12 and under, all the teams seemed to be actual all star teams.

For the older age groups, there were only a handful of actual all star teams. The rest were regular rec teams, who had been told they would be put in brackets with other rec teams. But in fact, the rec teams were mixed in with the all star teams (I assume because Valor considers all rec teams basically the same anyway). Then, the age groups were combined as well (U16 with U19, U13 and U14). So you had games like a U14 boys All Star team playing a U13 regular rec team, or a U19 superstar team playing a regular U16 rec team.

Moreover, CYA and SYA tried to "help" Valor's failed event out by talking some of their regular rec teams into playing in the tournament with no thought as to how that actually work. The rec coaches were told they would be playing other regular rec teams of similar ability to try to get them to sign up. Then those teams ended up playing the "All Star" teams from their own org, with predictable results. The All Star teams didn't get any competitive games, and the rec teams were slaughtered. The tournament isn't even reporting the scores correctly to try and minimize how bad it was.

All Star's is just a Travel feeder program. They'll start mixing/churning when Loudoun pulls most of those kids up onto travel. Usually that happens around 9-10 years old.

I get trying to cheap out on medals and make as much money as you can--because clearly profit is the only motivator for this thing--but even 10 cent cheap crap from Oriental Trading Company at least lasts until you get home.

I'm still not hearing any reasons for them to be called "shady", it really makes you sound like a sore loser. Are you upset that they practice earlier in the season? Any league could put their all star teams together at the beginning of the season instead of at the end and start have semi regular practices to be better prepared. Would you rather have your all star team play more regular season rec teams so you can get an easy win or would you rather face some good competition and try to motivate to win and get better. If you are really that sore about it, just wait until u13 and then you don't have to cry about it anymore when loudoun stops participating.

Loudoun is shady, there is no echo in here. Your teams do not compete in the same recreational league that everyone else does, which can reasonably lead most to believe these are permanent teams who compete in other events, perhaps tournaments in other areas.

Now one might conclude that that's a form of travel. But you're right about one thing, teams do it differently, some are transparent and ethical, others are Loudoun.

There is nothing shady about Loudoun (and I say this as my kid is usually on an A-S team that always loses to Loudoun). They have a HUGE rec league. Of course their teams are good. They are choosing the best from 200 kids, instead of the best from 50 kids.

I think this is the same set of sore losers from CYA that always cry about losing to Loudoun.
