Fox News host Trey Gowdy questioned Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) on Sunday over a past remarks from the VP candidate criticizing people who are “childless” and calling Vice President Harris a “cat lady” in an insult that has resulted in bipartisan blowback.

Gowdy, himself a former congressman, defended those without children in the opening monologue of his show. He shared a story of meeting a pair of Catholic nuns who prayed for his friend, who was expecting a child, after spending the day together in an airport. “And it’s not just Catholic nuns. Some of the finest people I know don’t have children,” Gowdy said. “Teachers and guidance counselors and lawyers and doctors, and they love other people’s children enough to teach and guide and protect and minister to them. Some people choose not to have children. Others desperately want them, but they can’t.” “The American people are forgiving, if we ask,” he added before welcoming Vance on the show.

Vance did not apologize for the comments, originally from 2021, instead accusing Democrats of being “anti-family.”

Gowdy again challenged Vance over the comments, pointing out that Condoleezza Rice, Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and George Washington are among American leaders without children. The senator [Vance] added that he won’t back down from his rhetoric, despite the criticism.

The childless cat lady comment is offensive not only to women without children, but also to those of us who do have children.

Having children was my choice, not my destiny. I adore my children, and I also have other things to offer the world. The relative fruitfulness of my uterus has zero bearing on my worth as a human being. JD suggesting otherwise gives me the absolute creeps.

After reading today's WaPo article about his texts with his former friend from law school who is trans, I feel even worse for Usha. Apparently this is not the guy she married, but now she has three young kids with him and probably still loves him. I noticed the part where he was texting that she was worried she wouldn't get a S Ct clerkship offer because she's so apolitical and didn't have any idelogical strings. Poor thing just wanted to be a super rich IP lawyer or maybe transition into a nice spot in academia at YLS or HLS or a judicial appointment on the Fed Circuit eventually .... and here she is at the center of the culture wars. I wonder if they are having "discussions" about whether the oldest kid is preparing for First Communion.
