Anyone else's middle schooler end up friendless this Halloween?

Anonymous

My kid loves Halloween.

Tried to set up things with friends. They all had plans or were not interested.

Now sitting inside alone. Doesn't want to hang out with mom outside.

Yes, mine is too. We just ordered pizza and are going to watch a scary movie together in a little while. Middle school is tough for some kids.

I just had one come to my door. Good for him!

OP here.

Mine dressed up, went for about 2-3 houses, until he got to the one that the popular girl lives and he turned around and quit for the night. I don't even think she is home.

Middle school stinks sometimes.

In our neighborhood they do (in real costumes!)

I think most of them are at parties this year.

I think they're starting to come around now.

Me too. He was all by himself, which made me a little sad. I gave him a ton of candy.

I remember middle school, and it sucked.

They should! It is fun for big kids too.

Middle school is rough.

We've had that happen too. They just do a bit on their own. And spend some time passing out candy. As they get older trick or treating is less important.

Oh god, this is heartbreaking. My kids are still younger but I'm so not going to be equipped to deal with stuff like this. I'm sorry OP. Hopefully a family night in will be fun for him. I remember so clearly one time in 7th grade, when one of our "cool kids" gave everyone a dressing down and left the cool table to eat lunch with a boy who was sort of an outlier that they were treating poorly. I followed because frankly I was a follower then and he was my closest friend. But it changed this kids life. We ate together a lot after that. Anyway, borderline non sequitur, but those of you who have kids who end up on the right side of the popularity lottery, please encourage your kids to be the kind who reach out. It just plain sucks when innocent kids are left out.

My kids are all older now, but we had some Halloweens like this when they were in middle school. I recall one year when my son was like 13 and his plans with some other kids fell through. It was pretty rough. I mentioned it to my son (now in college) the other day. He didn't even remember it! Huh, go figure.
