Colleges tell students to ask faculty if their Halloween costumes are offensive or not

When will this PC nonsense end? SOO glad I'm not in college anymore. The American university has truly become a graveyard for critical thinking and tolerance in the truest sense of the word. As in tolerant of all speech, not just "approved" speech.

Really? This is your big problem of the day? That people be free to wear offensive costumes?

#yourcostumemightberacistif you think you might need a professor to confirm its not offensive.

They did not make this up. I saw/ heard this story multiple times yesterday. Just because its in the DM does not mean it isn't true.

Someone should dress as a college administrator. That's damn offensive.

As for it being made up, there are actual images of the posters in the story. I agree the story is a little inflammatory, and these are more in the "PSA" category from campus life organizations rather than outright edicts... But, still.

Frankly, considering how eager college kids are to take offense at microaggressions these days, these PSAs are probably a good idea.

Would you allow your ES child to dress as a geisha? Or an Indian? Or, say, a Hassidic Jew?

Serious question. Answer it and then we can have a conversation about "PC"

What an endorsement of a newspaper.

I have been wondering this too -- who keeps linking to stuff from the Daily Mail, and more importantly, WHY?

Would an article detailing the exact same thing from the New York Times be more legit? Pc culture is absolute nonsense.

Yes, an article from the New York Times is more legit.

What does this article say? It says that lots of people are worrying about cultural appropriation. If you don't want to worry about cultural appropriation -- good news! you don't have to! If you want to go in blackface as Kanye West, go right ahead. There will be people who are upset about this, but you don't need to worry about their opinions, because you already know that "PC culture" is nonsense.

You know it goes more than that. The policing never stops. Sombrero hats are off limits? A Japanese person actually wearing a japanese outfit is off limits. No one is talking about black face here. Cultural appropriation has extended to everything. Anything can be worthy of an offense.

Yes it is nonsense, and you are probably part of the problem.

Wearing a black belt if you are not a black belt master was also off limits. Just ban everything. tons of people love Kung fu and anime culture. Next thing Cosplay will also be cultural appropriation.

The reason the nytimes had to write an article on it and thankfully most of be commentators on the article agree is that he policing has gone way too far. It's not just about "black face"

Meh. I don't see anything to get all het up about.

So, some colleges are putting out PSAs suggesting students think about the messages they are sending out when they costume for Halloween.

No crime. No punishment. Just a poster asking people to think.

I can't imagine this is any more devious than the signs on the metro asking patrons to leave open certain seats for the disabled.

I would allow my ES child to dress as a geisha or an Indian, yes of course. A Hassidic Jew? No.

Yes, the infantilization of college-age students continues.
