My 7th grader is going in full costume today

She's otherwise very quiet, anxious and insecure. I'm worried she'll be teased, although she doesn't get picked on in general.

I said something and she's got a strange bout of confidence over the costume. "My costume is AWESOME" she said.

Going to be interesting at pickup.

Are they having a costume party at school?
If not, I would worry too.

No, but kids are allowed to wear costumes. Normally it would be on Halloween proper.

Last year I'd say about half the kids wore them.

Then that's not so bad.

Unless she's going as a My Little Pony.

She's growing up! Yay! Why would you worry about this??

Well, I think it's natural to worry when you know your kid is going into a potentially precarious situation.

That said, I just dropped her off and she seems to be in good company. Fair number of kids in costumes -- I'm kind of impressed to see it in the middle school set. Normally they are too cool for school.

Say "you costume IS awesome! Have an awesome day!!"

You're supposed to be teaching her to not worry what others think about her, not tips on how to be cool.

Dummy, I did say that. I'm voicing my concern HERE, not to her. I'm happy she has the self-confidence, just worried it may be shattered. That's all.

Pish tosh, woman! Her costume is awesome, and if the kids at school are hard on her, she can come home and get sympathy from you.

The cool kids probably decided to wear costumes this year. The drones followed their lead. That is all.

I didn't know any schools let kids wear halloween costumes anymore. Which school system?

At my 8th grader's MS in FCPS it is costume day today as part of spirit week. They also have a 2 hour early dismissal.

The kids at Jefferson in Arlington can wear costumes. My DS was excited to wear his because they never did Halloween activities at elementary school.

Glad to know my kid is one of the cool kids, then.

I'm sorry, were you trying to put my kid down? It didn't work.

Potentially "precarious" situation?? Being teased over a Halloween costume when you're in the 7th grade is now precarious??

Mom, you say she is shy and has confidence problems. Did you ever think that your over-stressing about things like this could be contributing to that??
