Which is better - GMU or Stanford

Serious question-is the difference in reputation worth the cost? Now that GMU is rivaling UVA in prestige, and DD can commute - is the money worth it?

Interestingly she was rejected by VT

Definitely George Mason. Their Econ is ranked higher than Stanford. Plus it is cheaper.

This is a tough one. GMU is the proverbial rockstar these days in VA for instate students from DD's high school. Its engineering (Volgenau) now ranks higher than VT for example. In addition Fairfax Va is very comparable to Silicon Valley in terms of employment and HHI...

Good point. GMU also has the only Nobel winning economist on its faculty. Stanford does not.

My daughter is planning to do PhD research as a career (academic) and has no interest in a trade. My understanding is that Stanford is more trade-oriented but that GMU, with its proximity to DC and Govt has more public private innovation labs. Something to consider.

Should add of course she was accepted to some school called JMU we've never heard of.

This...is a parody, right? A glorified community college versus Stanford?

My suggestion - tour UVA and GMU and get back to us.

GMUs campus is more modern - won't find any 175 year old chemistry labs behind the walls - everything is new and fresh. I for one cannot stand old sh1tshack buildings- whether houses or college buildings.

Would a community college have a Nobel winning economist and a final four team?

I agree. The rotunda is pretty but GMU really houses tomorrow today. Their facilities are top notch-the Volgenau school of engineering is cutting edge and has labs for students to pilot new projects. Fairfax is buzzing these days and GMU is strategically located in the center of it all.

This is not a serious question....GMU is not even comparable to a VT much less Stanford.

George Mason has a top 25 law school, suck it.

If there is any chance she will ever want to live outside of Northern Virginia, she should go to Stanford. GMU may be a local golden child, but it does not compare to Stanford in national reputation or ability to attract talent from around the country and world.
