So this just happened...

My in-laws called a few days ago and asked my DH how much my parents typically give for our birthday checks, and just sent me a check for $225 for my upcoming birthday.

As in exactly $25 more than my parents give.

Sigh. Into DD college savings account it goes, and I'll write a thank you note.

But seriously? SERIOUSLY.

Too bad your DH didn't say $300.

1. You still receive birthday checks? And it's such a tradition that even your ILs know about it?

2. Yes, I agree that knowingly giving a little bit more is really messed up on their part.

3. So next time you can just tell them kindly that you don't need a gift. This is what I do.

Say 900 next time

Stop lying. Just admit you hate your inlaws.

Well, on the scope of meddlesome inlaws this is a pretty good problem to have.

1) Yes, my parents give all us kids and kids-in-law a birthday check and a little something like a book. It's very nice. The ILs got wind of this because they were here a few months ago for DH's birthday, and we opened all the cards and presents together after a little family dinner.

2) I'm a bit surprised they didn't just do $201, "The Price is Right"-style

3) They've always given gift-gifts in the past, so I don't think no gifts are an option.

Not sure why DH answered the question in the first place, but whatever...que sera, sera, and I know there are actual problems in the world, and this isn't one of them!

I don't hate them, but I'll admit I don't understand them! I recognize that they have good hearts and are nice and loving people, but this kind of "odd" behavior is fairly common with them.

You're complaining because your inlaws gave you a $225 check for your birthday?

I can't even. Read the news sometime. Be thankful for your life.

Jesus. You're gonna make a complaint about this?

Yep, looks like I am! Plenty more Internet where this came from if you don't like what you're reading here!

Honey I'll take your ILs any day! You have no idea!

I can't even imagine how it would be to get money from both sides of the family like that. That said, I think all you can do is chuckle and deposit the check. They obviously have issues but I'd take that over some of the other crap people have to deal with when it comes to their ILs.

Not OP, but here's "how it would be"; a check would come in the mail, you'd cash it or deposit it, and you'd send a thank you note.
