AAP Middle School with Regular Math

Question: If I take my DD off advanced math (5th grade AAP not at Center), would she still be able to attend AAP middle school (center) instead of our local school? She wants out of math but wants to stay in her classroom and go to the same middle school as her friends.

If your DD is Center-eligible, you can reinstate Center-eligibility at any time (between grade 3 and grade 8).

The form is on this webpage:

However, if you are moving to a center school that is not your base middle school you have to do all AAP or higher classes. You cannot, for example, mix AAP and honors classes or AAP and general 7th grade math.

Students in AAP Centers at middle school are part of the team for AAP Science, English, and Social Studies/Civics, and they enroll in math either in Algebra 1 Honors/Geometry Honors (for those who qualify) or Math 7 Honors/Algebra 1 Honors.

Excuse my ignorance, but is Algebra 1 Honors/Geometry Honors the same class? Or do they get a choice of either class. Same for Math 7 Honors and Algebra 1 Honors (one class or a choice of classes). And what do children that are not in advanced math take in 7th grade? Thank you!!!

PP is referring to the 2 year course sequence for AAP in MS Algebra I Honors(7th), Geometry Honors (8th) or Math 7 Honors, then Algebra I honors (a very small number of kids are further accelerated, and take Geometry Honors in 7th, Algebra II honors in 8th). Non-AAP kids have the option of taking Math 7, with or without honors, and then either Math 8 or Algebra (with or without honors).

Algebra 1 Honors is for qualified students in 7th grade and the sequence continues to Geomtery Honors in 8th grade. Qualified students are those scoring 91% or higher on the Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test and scoring Pass Advanced (500 and higher) on the 7th grade Math SOL, after completing Advanced Math in grade 6.

Students not in advanced math in grade 6 would take Math 7 or Math 7 Honors in 7th grade.

Non AAP kids can also take the Algebra I Honors (7th) / Geometry Honors (8th) sequence if they came from an elementary school that offered advanced math. At my kids middle school there are many non AAP kids doing this.

+1 and if they meet the other (SOL/ IOWA) requirements

OP: here's the answer you're looking for. She could go to the AAP Center, but she would have to take Honors Math 7, rather than "normal" Math 7 (assuming Algebra is off the table in 7th) and honors Algebra in 8th.

Yes. You have to test into the top math track, but you can always opt out of that top math class and place your daughter wherever you feel is appropriate. The only issue that you need to look into is whether they offer the math class that you want for 7th graders. Not all levels of all of the classes are offered at all schools.

Not wherever you feel appropriate. To stay in an AAP MS, you need to take AAP in science, English and history and an HONORS level math (generally maTh7 or Algebra in 7th). You can't opt out of honors math and go AAP.

This is not the case at all middle schools. Although the number is low, there are some kids who take Math 7 for their math class as opposed to Math 7 Honors, Honors Algebra, or Honors Geometry.

Definitely the case in ours that you have to take 3x AAP plus honors math to stay in the center. Maybe that's not the case at the LLIV MSs? Probably the only way to know for sure is call your Dc's zoned AAP Center MS.
