Yes. You have to test into the top math track, but you can always opt out of that top math class and place your daughter wherever you feel is appropriate. The only issue that you need to look into is whether they offer the math class that you want for 7th graders. Not all levels of all of the classes are offered at all schools.

Not wherever you feel appropriate. To stay in an AAP MS, you need to take AAP in science, English and history and an HONORS level math (generally maTh7 or Algebra in 7th). You can't opt out of honors math and go AAP.

+1

So if she went to a regular classroom for only 5th and 6th grade math and stayed in the AAP classroom for the rest, would she be able to just get into math 7th honors? Is it a choice or is there a test to get into math 7 honors? Is math 7 honors a more in depth math 7?
BTW, thank you for all your patience and responses.

Definitely not true at all schools. My 7th grader is in AAP for his core subjects (science, social studies, and English) and in Math 7 regular. It's the perfect fit for him and for the first time since 3rd grade my kid isn't crying about math on a weekly basis. He finally has the time to slow down and really master the fundamentals he has never had the chance to get a good grasp on. According to his teacher, about 1/3 of her students go on to Math 8 Honors and the rest go in to Math 8. I have no dog in that fight, I want him where he should be, but it's good to know that he has the option to move to honors next year if he's ready to.

OP: It's a big county and local principals have a lot of say. Call the Center MS and ask the guidance counselor if DC can take regular math 7 in AAP.

As others have said, the policy can be different based on the middle school. However, consider that if your DD drops down to 5th Gr Gen Ed math this year, then she will take the 5th grade SOL. She is then on a path to take 6th grade GE math and 6th grade SOL.

In middle school, IF the middle school requires AAP student to take Honors math then she would be taking Math 7H and take 8th grade SOL.
At this point, she would be skipping a year of math. For some kids, it is not a problem. Others may struggle.

Definitely contact the Center middle school to discuss their policy.

I would discuss is directly with my child's own teacher. The teacher knows your child and has seen your child's work this year. He or she may have good suggestions and may also be familiar with the path at your assigned middle school for math.
