Martha's Vineyard

I am going to a wedding there next spring (flying). I don't know much about the island. Any recommendations on where to stay. We will not have a car. Would like to be able to walk for meals and site seeing though we will not have lots of free time around the wedding events. Thanks.

Edgartown has the most going on in terms of upscale shopping and restaurants. There is a cheap bus that connects all of the towns on the island. I love the galley/the bit in Menemsha for fried seafood, cute harbor there too and Homeport is my favorite restaurant for dinner on the island. Aquinnah has the great view of the lighthouse and is quiet and beautiful. OB has the "flying horses" and the gingerbread cottages at the campground. Vineyard Haven has some hood shops and restaurants. Net results is a great place for seafood sandwiches for lunch. Art Cliff dinner is amazing for breakfast/brunch - there will be a line after 8am. South Beach, which you can get to on the bus as well, is the "best" ocean beach if you are going to swim. Among the Flowers cafe is my favorite restaurant in Edgartown. Port Hunter is sceney in Edgartown and all the hotels have fancy restaurants attached. Alchemy is expensive and good. There are some great galleries up island - my family loves going to the Field Gallery and seeing the glassblowing at Glass Works.

We have a summer house there and I have been going to MV since the 80s so feel free to ask any more questions.

Delta has 1 $360 rt airfare to MV (stopping at JFK). This seems pretty good to avoid flying to RI and ferrying to MV?

YES.... also the ferry from RI is expensive in the first place.

Just FYI - I have done that flight before and had to switch terminals and it was tight.

MV sure has changed A LOT since the 80s! And generally not for the better.

The island is more than 20 miles long. You will need a car.

Agree - There are several towns on MV. If you want to walk to wedding events you need to specify the town.

You can also rent bikes and bike between Oak Bluffs, Edgartown and Vineyard Haven pretty easily, although I wouldn't do that to get to from the wedding/reception, more as a fun thing to do to see the island.

It can be quite chilly in spring - depends on if you are talking March or May, but even in May it can be chilly.

You can also fly jetBlue to Boston and then Cape Air to MV. They are located next to each other in Logan, and do code share flights.

The wedding is in Tisbury...Stoney Hill Road House.

Stay in Vineyard Haven then (aka Tisbury). The Black Dog (the tavern, not just the store) is based in Vineyard Haven which is worth going to even if it's touristy. It's open year round.
