Preeminant Doctor in the area to Diagnose Adult ADD

Anonymous
Our DD has ADHD, ASD, and Dyslexia. My DH and I have a good relationship but repeated challenges due to what I suspect is his adult ADHD and he struggled as a child with almost identical issues to our DD. He has always reluctantly admitted he has a lot of the same challenges as our DD (minus the Dyslexia), but saw no benefit to being tested or treated. Last night he read an NPR piece on Ned Hallowell and adult ADD (Driven to Distraction) and is finally willing to pursue diagnosis/treatment which I think may really help him and us. Who is an expert in the area he could go to?

Hi OP -

From my perspective, there is a difference between what an adult is looking to achieve with an ADHD diagnosis vs what you as a parent are looking to achieve for your child who is in school and therefore needs accommodations.

If your DH has gotten this far in life without workplace accommodations, then don't waste you money on an expensive and unnecessary assessment. I suggest you have him talk with a psychiatrist who can prescribe medication for him, and then monitor his progress to see if the meds are helping or if they need to be tweaked.

That's what I did. I struggled all through school, hated it! It wasn't until my 12 yr old was diagnosed 6 years ago that I started seeing similarities and realize that I too likely had ADHD. Then I started a new job, and the shit hit the fan. I found myself disorganized and behind the 8-ball all the time. Forgetful and easily distracted, and always fearing I was going to be fired! I mentioned it to DS' psychiatrist and she put me on Adderrall. Literally changed my life.

My husband was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult all via a psychologist and psychiatrist. It was the best thing for him personally and professionally.

Does ADHD interfere with your reading comprehension? Apparently so, b/c no where did the OP mention wanting to get workplace accommodations.

She's looking for a psychiatrist recommendation, duh.

Where are you OP? I would recommend Dr. Putnam in Bethesda.

Thanks all. We are in Silver Spring. I realize that we won't need the kind of comprehensive neuropsych exams our DD has had. Just looking for an expert who can confirm diagnosis and recommend treatment.

Wow PP I was merely trying to be helpful to OP - you clearly don't understand that.

I sure hope that you're response somehow made you feel better about yourself. I feel sorry for you that you live in your skin every day, and that you're maturity hasn't progressed past middle school.

This forum used to be a safe place, but lately it seems to have been infiltrated by a few individuals who have decided to use this forum as their punching bag. Typical bully mentality where you beat down those who are clearly suffering and/or living challenging lives. Its not funny, this is not a game.

You need serious soul-searching to figure out why it is that you feel you need to do this PP.

You don't so much need the pre-eminent doctor to diagnose your DH because that's not hard. What's hard is finding the right person to work with you on treatment. THAT is the question you need to ask. What kind of problems/challenges is your DH having that he'd like to improve and where are you located? FWIW, we had much greater success with DH working with a professional than working with me. She didn't tell him or have him do anything that I hadn't already suggested but you know how it is, it's always easier to hear it from someone else than your loved one......
